I did this very same mod switching out non-hid for hid. If I recall correctly the connector was a bit different but did plug in. Of course this is wrong to do as you suspect. I've driven about 25k like that. I do plan to revise to be like factory.

Tough one... Try a battery disconnect/wait/reconnect. I notice on mine that this does a hard reset. The radio stations are preserved.

I believe they fixed this design flaw in the late '05 model year... I think it was a flaw with the design of a coolant passage around cylinder #8. It would overheat and fry valves due to inadequate coolant flow. My 05 seems alright for now but I don't push it hard and have about 50k only. This...
