SURPRISE - no warning, just lost reverse

Just ran into another 5r55 with a blown valve body gasket and no reverse. On a navigator this time.

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

So, after driving it for a bit, the misfire has slowly been getting worse, and it now has a slight misfire when warmed up, not just when it's cold. So I've stopped driving it, and will be ordering an overhaul kit, no avoiding pulling the engine. Its getting a tear down, hopefully just needs a...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

The Engine Restore helped the smoking from leaking valve seals, and smoothed out the idle, but so far has done nothing for the cold misfire. The bottle does say 500 to 1000 miles before I will see improvement, and I've only done 100. I will give this stuff props in 100 miles it completely...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

I used to do fleet maintenance, it's been a long time since I rebuilt an engine as small as a 3.9l . It might be fun to rebuild a gasser, instead of a diesel with a 400lb crank shaft. And my small cylinder hone, and my snap on cylinder bore gauge haven't seen action in like 12 years, they're due...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

Already did a propane test, with the scanner attached. I know it's a compression issue in #3 I'm just trying to delay the inevitable rebuild. I'm not going to tear this thing down and do a backyard job hone 1 cylinder and 1 set of rings. When it does come apart it's getting an overhaul, All new...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

Ok so started it today, no smoke what so ever, misfire stayed for 2 minutes, and I've discovered something. If I start it put it in gear and give it a little gas misfire goes away, if I start it and let it idle misfire stays for about 2 minutes. Saturday I should have a little over 100 miles on...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

I put Sea Foam into cylinder #3 overnight to clean any buildup on the rings. The Engine Restore goes into the oil, like Joe said.

SURPRISE - no warning, just lost reverse

Yeah been through it with the 5r55w 2 times, been lucky with the s so far, but if it happens I know where to look thanks to all the no reverse exploders. The S and W are almost identical the only difference is the select shift option. The way you said you just lost reverse I'd take a bet that...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

Day 2 after putting restore in, started the car, no puff of smoke, actually took about 15 seconds for the slight stream to start, misfire was gone before I got out of my parking spot. Since I've had the car this misfire hasn't gone away that quickly ever. Best I've had is about a minute, it was...

SURPRISE - no warning, just lost reverse

The gasket for the 5r55s and 5r55w are the same, I buy most of my parts off of Ebay, at least the more expensive stuff. But the gasket is like $15-20 it's pretty cheap, you will probably pay more for new fluid than the gasket. I would check a local tranny shop, they can probably get you upper...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

Started it this morning, still a slight misfire, and a tiny wisp of white smoke out the tailpipe. No white puff like usual, that's a nice side effect. Didn't even make it to the end of the driveway, misfire stopped, usually takes until the stop sign. Jumped on it, tires spun, and it hesitated...

SURPRISE - no warning, just lost reverse

No the e, s, n, and w don't all have the same hook ups, the internals are even slightly different between variations, but this is a known issue with the 5r55 tranny in all the varieties, and the process to fix it is the same.

SURPRISE - no warning, just lost reverse

P.S when this gasket gives out you lose reverse and have hard upshifts sometimes, not always, but you always lose reverse. Some times if the gasket isn't totally blown out you might still get reverse while the fluid is cold.

SURPRISE - no warning, just lost reverse

I know this one, experienced it before on the 5r55 tranny! Your valve body gasket blew out right by the reverse solenoid. It's a simple fix if you are even remotely handy. You will have to drop the pan pull the solenoid body out, and remove the valve body. before you remove the valve body look...

    Rear sway bar bushings

I did rear bushings on a Jaguar xk8, We had to have them shipped over from England. I know the xk and the LS aren't the same platform, but it's possible they could fit, or maybe from an x-type AWD. Worth a look, it's highly likely that ford only used a few different bushings.

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

Well, I let the LS sit with sea foam in #3 for another night, dried it out, and retested again, 115 psi, pretty much no gain since yesterday. Put it all back together and put Engine Restore into it. This stuff says 500 to 1000 miles to take effect, 1 hour at an idle running a cylinder balance...

    Engine cover retainers

I got tired of the pop in style ones popping out, they don't need to be threaded, they just pop into a hole in a metal bracket. I bought a whole set of the locking style ones with the center pin and replaced all of the screw in style ones on all my plastics. No more lost pop clips.

    Rear sway bar bushings

I did rear sway bar bushings in a 2000 on jack stands without removing anything, wasn't even a tough job.

Cooling issue - not the norm trust me :)

I would say anyone having spikes over 210, even climbing a hill with A/C on has an issue. In the 2 years I've had my LS it's never once gone above 210. I've seen these hydraulic fans partially fail. My brothers LS was running hot at an idle 2 years ago, and temp would creep up under a load. We...

2001 LS cold misfire, back at it again!

So after sitting all night and drying the cylinder out I have a slight improvement 110 psi on #3 cold....!@#$, !@#$, !@#$, and @#$ 150 psi wet, 190 hot... So Ok hot is totally acceptable, I didn't even bother with a wet test hot. cold is better but not at all good. Some trick work with a led...
