I ended up selling the car. New owner had me put a new transmission in it, at her cost. Removal and replacement is relatively straightforward. I think book time is around 3-4 hours. Solenoid pack replacement is pretty simple as well.

Same thing happened to me, was the tcc solenoid. Don't drive it like that, too much slip will blow the transmission (it wasn't fun).

A 4 foot wobble extension or a 4 ft extension and a swivel socket at the end, drop the rear trans mount, and go over top of the trans to get the 4 top mounting bolts. Shouldn't take more than an hour to get the trans out. Figure 2-3 hours for removal if you've never done it before.

The solenoid connector is very easy to not fully seat. And once the trans is all the way up, it's a pita to get to the bolt on the connector.

All fixed! Backprobed the PCM connector and got the solenoid connector all wired up! Trans shifts nice and smooth.

No dice on the fluid. TCC is stuck released. Cannot force it to apply through scan tool either. With the car on the lift I can put it in drive, and it will slam into gear after a several second delay.

Thanks ls4me. I totally forgot to re check trans fluid level. Between the new owner breathing down my neck to get the car done, trying to get my actual work done, getting yelled at by my boss for the LS taking up a bay for 3 days, and everything else, my mind has been a bit crazy the past few...

Little update. Rewired the connector. Apparently when I wired in the new connector, I flip flopped all of the PC wires. There are 3 brown/white wires, 2 brown/green, and 2 Brown/yellow wires. All of them were wrong. I now have no codeS, but the engine will stall out when I try to shift to drive.

Re-seated connector, now getting codes p0796 and p1746 only.

Everything worked fine put until the trans exploded a few months ago. Car has been parked since then.

Replaced solenoid block with known good one. Made sure connector was fully seated. Still pulling same codes. Any other ideas joe?

Yes. But sticks in 4th gear. Seems to me the tcm isn't communicating with the solenoid block at all.

Gear indicator shows "E" Car is a 2000 v6. 5r55n transmission. Original foundry stamping of 22. Replaced with foundry stamping 21 Car will move, and shift through gears on the lift (verified with SnapOn Solus scanner) Pulling codes as follow: p0713 p0743 p0750 p0755 p0760 p0796 p1746...

I will be compression testing the other bank once I get the manifold pulled.

the car smells like burning coolant, is low on coolant, and the coolant is contaminated - I too have never really heard of HG problems on the Duratec's, thats why I posted here. Everything points to HG at this point.

that was my other guess. but the smell of coolant led me more towards the HG. Its a 3.0L duratec with VVT

Planning on pulling the trans next weekend. Local pullapart is supposed to call me when they get an LS in. there are currently two locally, and I believe both are V8s. 05LSV8Guy, the E36 is very old... 92... and needs a drivers door, as the latch broke while it was locked and will now not open...

its cool no civic for me. Ill put a new trans in the LS. Driving my E36 for the time being.

my tcc solenoid was going bad, pretty sure the TC died, and released its trans fluid everywhere (onto hot exhaust), regardless, if im pulling the trans, ill replace it with a lower mileage one. And Anton, no donuts today... just slipped shifting into 1st and bang! trans/and/or TC is kaput.
