The thermostat housing probably blew (by blew, i mean pressure blown on the very front of the housing) because of a failed thermostat, right?

I use Amsoil XL full synth. Its a little pricey but compared to other synth's this lasts the longest. And yes you do need 7 qts. I usually put the full 6 in then a couple splashes of the 7th. Add as needed.
