I bought my L's used 2005 with 37000 miles in April of 2012 with no extend warentee the Cops have a Ford recall ten year one hundred thousand mile warente, my advise is if your Is falls in this recall have your dealer check and replace the cops as needed for free. Mine have been all replaced...
I agree with letting the car warm up until the idle drops ,Waiting until oil reaches the top of your motor ensures proper lubrication, Taking care of your motor especially in cold weather makes for a happy Ls .
I have a 2005 ls with a complete system cats back and ran into two problems , the cats fitting the manifolds and the system fitting tight up under the tunnel and brace it took a custom fabrication cutting and welding to make the system fit, t now is fully welded with no clamps and sounds great...
Brake Motive
SCJMC No Worries ive had the brake motive up grade pads and rotors for almost a year with no problems.
Stops on a dime with no noises.

You also might want to check to see if there is any damage to a gas line where the muffler got riped off it would also cause the smell if the line is leaking?
You should look at the KKM or K&N for your v6 both work well
Also i have the magnaflows on my 2005 LS a cat back system which sounds good depending on your tast you may want to leave off the resonators if you like it a bit loud some members have done theirs this way but for me i like the quiet...

Its always a good starting place to get the LS breathing well so maybe a cold air intake system and exhaust from there cosmetics are well liked wheels (Jag 18-20")Tint,angle eyes ect good luck...
Fore all the cost and time involved in trying to drop the 302 in a LS you would be money ahead to go with a remote twin turbo system and gain the same HP with the 3.9 LS V8.

Eibach sells a kit for the LS to use with their springs it was needed to align my 2005 front end to specks,the dealer did a four wheel alignment and the kit put it right to speck.

Sounds like this would be a costly install would you recomend a after market nav system in dash i could use /have installed that would be a better fit for my 05 LS?, I would like to have as much a factory system functions ect as possible.
