My 04 lsv8 did the same thing. I wound up discharging and recharging. Works perfect now.

It is called a door check. It's purpose is to not allow the door to extend too far when opened. It is made of thin metal at the end where it bolts to the post, so it wouldnt hold up very well to being welded. Your safest bet would be to replace it.:( Dave
