Hello everybody,

In preparation for a full suspension rebuild on my 01 LS V6 sport, I recently ordered two new front upper control arms from Max at 5-Star Ford. They just arrived this morning and I was amused to see that they have "Jaguar" cast into them on the underside (see pic):

So it looks like replacement front upper suspension arms are now going to be the Jaguar S-Type version. Also noted on Max's paperwork that the Ford part numbers changed, as follows:

New: 6W4Z-3085-AA (was F04W4Z-3085-AA) and 6W4Z-3084-AA (was F04W4Z-3084-AA).

For what it's worth, the Jaguar arms also appear to be a bit better finished than the Ford items (nice smooth castings).

we cant see the pic...you have to host it onto an image site and post the html link on here insde the img tags.

You could use tinypic or Photobucket but its the samething as the photo uploader here isnt it?

go advanced, click paperclip, browse, pick picture, click OK, click upload, Wait for it to upload, close window, click paperclip, select picture. Done

sweet.

so this shows that the suspension is indeed a jaguar design which ford borrowed.

the entire powertrain and suspension is all jag minus the tranny correct me if im wrong.

The LS and Jaguar S-Type engines are different (though related). Transmissions are definately different - I believe Jaguar S-Type used ZF, while the LS used the Ford 5R55.
All the platform/chassis "hard points" (e.g. suspension mounting points, general layout) are identical between the LS and and the S-Type. As is already known by most of us on this forum, the suspension and brake hardware is essentially identical.

I dont like the brakes..they feel underpowered for how heavy the car is.

Agreed. The system is not very "stiff" and there is fair bit of pedal travel, because the roll-back clearances in the calipers are quite high.

Actually, the DEW98 platform (Jaguar S-Type, Lincoln LS, Ford Thunderbird) was a joint design project between Ford and Jaguar. Ford owned Jaguar at the time. Somewhere, there was a drawing that showed (a) all the identical parts shared between the LS and the S-type, (b) the similar but tuned or programmed differently parts, and (c) the completely different parts.

In the specific case of the gen II, the bottom of the engine is more or less the same, but the top is very different.

Off on a tangent I know, but does anyone know if the Ford Thunderbird followed the LS Gen1 or Gen II ? Or was there a similar Gen1 to Gen II transition for the T-Bird ?

Both.

2002 thunderbird was gen I and the rest were gen II.

But they dont have the message center cup holders or e-brake from gen II.

They look pretty cool...id like to see one lowered on 18's.

I wonder if anybody on this forum knows where that drawings is........?

Please tell us your impression of the differences between 'Jag' and 'LS' engines.

Actually, in 2002 the Jag had the 5 speed 5R55N, same as the LS. 2003 brought the 6 speed ZF automatic transmission.

really, both of my LS's have had incredible braking. even before the better rotors and pads, it would easily put the anti-lock to work. which means that the tires are the weak point.

then i switched to a set of slightly wider, much sticker goodyear F1's and now its very hard to get the wheels to lock up except under the hardest of stops.

however if you really want better

go for it!

Yall think so??

The abs is great yes...but i still dont think the oem stopping power is what it should be for a 2 ton vehicle.

maybe when i get ds rotors and ebc pads ill notice a difference. i also havent done my rear brakes just the fronts.

I think it's just a brake feel thing. The (standard) system is not very "stiff" and has a fair bit of pedal travel before the pads really bite the rotors. As for absolute braking power it's probably good enough, but the system feel does not inspire great confidence.

Stay away from EBC. I tried them once. They put dust all over the wheels and didn't last very long at all.

The brakes work fine. You have to push the pedal harder at low speeds than you do with most other cars. Once you get used to it, it's not bad.
