I am going to redo my exhaust. I was wondering if anyone has a sound clip of an LS that just has a center muffler and no rear mufflers. When I did NYC LS8's exhaust we started it with just the center muffler and 2 long pipes and it sounded pretty good, but that was on the lift, so I wanted to try to hear it driving if anyone has one or knows where there is a sound clip. I searched you tube and all LS's I found have the rear mufflers.

When we did mine I did a quick drive around the parking lot and it sounded cool but way too loud. SOrry no video. Just watch one with mufflers and turn your volume way up :D

When I heard it while doing NYC LS8's car he used a 14" body muffler, it was loud also, I am getting a 18" body muffler, hopefully tune it down a little bit.

I kind of like that.

Do you plan on posting something while driving and some pics of the system?

That video doesn't do it justice. Sounds like your camera's microphone is too close. I knew I shoulda taken one as you were backing it off the lift!!! Sounded awesome!

Can't believe removing the mid-muffler on my car and replacing it with another X seems to have made it quieter

Anyways, here's some pics I took:

Rick - yeah he had a rasp to his exhaust, which is why he went this route.

00 - He's sending the exhaust to his old man in Florida who also has an LS.

cool... I was also wondering were you guys were getting the x pipes.. I really like the one muffler idea.. did he notice a performance gain

a bit too loud for my taste.

I'm thinking about deleting the resonators on my 03 and installing a couple magnaflow mufflers in replace of the factory muffs.

Any of you done this that can comment as to if it will be raspy? Remember; I still have a third cat...

I'm pretty sure Nick said that the rasp is pretty much gone when I talked to him yesterday after we both got home. It could just be much less know and it's harder for him to tell from inside the car.

We removed my mid-muffler and replaced it with another X pipe (so that's two back to back) and left the rear mufflers. I got on it tonight into the upper RPMs and I get a little raspiness. If I don't go with camthman's resonators and mufflers, I'm gonna put the mid-muffler back with the two Xs and remove the rear mufflers and see what happens.

And just an FYI, but we both have the stock cats right off the stock exhaust manis.

That would be ideal I think, your small center muffler with either 1 added x, or both x's.

As far as my raspyness, I am gonna need to take a moving clip to tell, cause while driving I deff. dont hear it, I think it gets that when in park reving it, not while there is a load, I will have to see. Is is louder and deaper though, I like it

Nate i have a setup like you mention and i do get a rasp noise. i have the magnaflow mufflers and no resonators, stock piping though. i've been trying to figure out how to get rid of it but it seems nick found a way. do you think it would be necessary nick or NYC (sry NYC i always refer to you as such due to the fact that i do not know your name) to have the X or you think the mid-muffler might get rid of it alone? then again, i'm just wondering if i re-install my resonators will it go away? i have them in my garage

has anyone thought of doing an H pipe... I believe the H pipe is a Trq gain and the X is a HP....correct me if i'm wrong

X is the torque gain, H is for HP.

Rick - I know for a fact that I had no rasp with 1 X, mid muffler (which wasn't really an X inside) and the two rear mufflers. This is with 2.5" piping from the cats back. I know I heard some yesterday with the woman in the car asking her if the car sounded the same, because it kind of does at idle and light throttle, but when I get on it and go WOT it sounds throatier with a tad bit of rasp...from what I can tell from inside the car. The car also feels like it's picked up a tiny bit more oomph and pulls harder/more responsive. But that could be that my butt dyno needs to be recalibrated. :D

Oh yeah, and it's Tommy. :Beer

I wanted to also add and H in the exhaust along with the x, but time constraints did not allow. I will probably add the H, may also go to a smaller muffler like Tommy's cause of ground clearance. The 5x8 body muffler dual in/out is the smallest body with the built in x, but hangs a little low, so according to how much bottoming out I do will tell if it stays

I have 2000 ls 3.9 v-8 with the rear mufflers cut off and the stock resonators left on and it sounds mean. It is not too loud and i don;t hear any drone. the car definitely has more power. Keep in mind though that my factory exhaust is 2.25 from manifolds to end of resonators then it goes down to 2 inch for the tailpipes. i had straight 2inch pipes welded in replace of factory mufflers. My plans are to add an h-pipe cut off resonators and replace with slp loudmouth resonators and have tailpipes be 2.25 like the rest of the exhaust. The reason you may be getting too much drone or it is too loud is because you have 2nd generation with 2.5 inch pipes which will increase the volume of your exhaust. if you get drone it is also likely because of how our exhausts are placed under the rear bumper which will make the exhaust sounds and pulses bounce off the rear bumber and under carriage giving you the drone. you can experiment by making your tailpipes go down into 2.25 which should quiet it down and probably give you more torque to boot. Our exhausts were designed to be quiet not for performance. they also were designed to give us torque for our small engine because we don't have much to begin with. if you go from the engine bigger to smaller it will cut noise and increase torque because of creating more back pressure the little engine needs. To increase the exhaust size in our cars is overkill unless you want more noise and less torque and performance. We do not have sport car motors like mustangs otherwise we could fiddle with exhaust but only to gain a measly few extra hp anywayand not the bs claims from manufacturers and companies. I've owned 6 v-8 mustangs and i know!!!
