Transmission Problem

I was on my way home from work yesterday when i went to pass a guy. When I went to pass the guy, i stepped on the gas and all the car did was rev up really high but not go any further. I backed off and got back behind him and everything seemed alright, but about a mile down the road the same thing happened. I pulled over and switched it to the manual and was able to go only in 2nd, 4th, and 5th gear (with pretty hard shifting). The car doesn't go anywhere in 1st, 3rd or reverse. Any ideas? 2000 V8 168,000 miles

Sounds like it's slipping which means a bad trans.

is there anything specific in the trans that is causing it to slip?

1st, 3rd and reverse, I bet are on the same lay shaft. You broke the shaft. You will need a rebuild.
I broke a GM trans doing the same thing some time ago. Fortunately I had a warranty.
