Automatic transmission drain and fill

How many liters of transmission fluid do i need for a drain and fill???

thanks in advance

also what tools/size do i need to open the drain bolt and the other bolt on the side of the pan?

Which gen do you have?
Do you mean to do a full fluid exchange, or just drain and refill the pan?

just drain and refill the pan the car is an Automatic 2004 Lincoln LS V6

thanks

is it possible to completely drain the fluid from the pan through small fluid level plug? or does the bigger one have to be takin out too

i took out the small one fluid came out for about 10/15 secs...can't find the tool to open the bigger one so i need to know if it's necessary to open the bigger one

The small one is just to check the fluid level. When you take it out, a small amount should trickle out if it is correctly filled.

You have to remove the outer plug to drain the pan.

"When you take it out, a small amount should trickle out" this did not happen about 1 liter of fluid came out I did this in the morning the car was off all night and was not in idle

I removed the drain bolt and another liter (approximately) came out

altogether i got close to 4 liters of fluid out of the drain pan is this normal?

Well, the level check is supposed to be done with the engine running and only after cycling through the gears. That's probably why too much fluid came out of the level check plug. It would also be different if the car weren't level.

4 liters out of the 11.2 total is probably about right.

should the gasket around the drain pan and transmission filter be replaced? the cars only got 43000miles on it

thanks

Time is a factor too. I would replace it, but that is not to say that you might not get away without doing so.

I have had my pan off several times and re-used the same gasket each time. Its good to replace it but I never have and I have no leaks. IIRC the pan actually says the gasket is re-useable but that may be different car I'm thinking of.

i plan on doing two more drain and fills

how many miles will it take to get the new fluid mixed with the old? around the block? on and off the highway? or wait until next oil change which will be in 3000kms

If you want to get all of the fluid changed, then the only way is to have a full exchange/flush done. You can drop the pan twenty times and change the fluid that drains out and there will still be some of the old fluid and trash mixed in.

if you pull out the drain pan you could get away with filling up the drain pan with 4-5 liters of fluid then have someone hold the pan in place while you put the screws in beats pumping in 4-5 liters

You're serious? You'd rather risk dropping a pan with 4-5 liters of expensive Mercon V than just take the time to properly pump it in? Plus, do you even realize how heavy 4-5 liters of fluid is?

i did it and it didnt seem all that heavy (maybe because once poured into the pan the weight is more evenly distributed) First i placed 2 bottled liters into the pan and it seemed heavy but when i poured it out didnt seem heavy and i ended up pouring 4 liters into the pan you could even get away with 5 liters if your careful enough while placing the pan back into place

fluid check

to check transmission fluid level 2004 Lincoln LS Automatic

1. turn car on wait/drive until normal operating temperature

2.run through all gears

3.put car in park leave car on and put the car on hoist

4.unscrew the small screw that's in the middle of the bigger one

if fluid drips out or becomes a thin stream the fluid is at the correct level

is this right i want to be sure

Yes, more or less. It should dribble out. If it's a stream, then it's overfilled and you should let it drain until it's just a dribble.

Here's a more elaborate way to do it.
