actually, the collider is looking for particles that have as of yet eluded detection. if found, they will further the understanding of the cosmos. if not found, it still doesn't disprove the understanding. it will just mean a different way of detecting the particles must be found.
similar to gravity. you have an effect, and can prove gravity is related to mass, but what exactly creates it is still not understood.
