I replaced the chrome strips on my bumper today.

They don't make the original part anymore. The part I used is flat on the adhesive side. That works fine for the doors and quarter trim, but the original bumper peice is angled on the adhesive side.

The strip I used is a Flexi Chrome part HR018C.

Here's some photos. I tried to show the difference between the original and the flat one, and how it fits in the bumper channel.

I just split a length of double sided tape and put each half on each strip, to act as a shim to angle the strip properly, or at least, close.:)

lol, thats what i did today. where was this post before?

i went to advanced autoparts and bought 30 feet of 1/2" chrome striping. i did the back today. the side and front are tomorrow.

Thanks guys.

95MkViii, have fun with the side pieces, removing the adhesive is worse on the door and quarter strips.:)

ill do a thread after i get home from work today. you all get to stay home and i have to work :(

anyways, what i did was a removed the plastic chrome. then used a puddy knife to start removing the adhesive. then removed what was left with my finger nails. then hit the area with rubbing alcohal to make sure i get a good stick for the chrome to body. and applied then chrome. :D

looks amazing to me.

I do not know if this will work for you do to the age of the vehicle and the adhesive being probably hardened to the point of cracking in some spots but here it is.

Awhile back I had a 86 Fox Body Stang and some of the side molding were changed out for 87 and later pieces and if you know about Stangs the pre 87 body moldings are different. So I went and scouted out some stock yr specific pieces and took the other ones off. I had a hell of a time with the adhesive coming off and I did not want to screw the paint up doing it with sharp instruments. So I masked off some paper on the bottom side of the contour lip and applied paper to free hang away from the body. I then put some finger nail polish remover in a bowl and took a sponge and soaked one edge of it and applied it to the old adhesive. While I did that I would hold the sponge on it for a few seconds to allow it to try and soak the adhesive. I used the paper and tape on the bottom of the contour lip for the run off of polish remover as it has acetone in it and did not want it to discolor or distort the clear or what not, or knew if it would or not but did not want to take the chance. But I came back about 15 minutes later and had a easier way with the adhesive coming off. It kinda softened it and came off much easier and left no markings as if I were to use a sharp object.

Just a FYI type of thing.

I've used an eraser wheel to remove the stickum from moldings before with good results but I don't know if it would work well in the groove for the chrome strips. When using the wheel on the backside of the door and quarter panel molding, the plastic begins to come off after the residue from the adhesive.

I have some old trim I guess I could try it on.

How well does the bumper stuff stay in if the original is angled and this isn't?
Is moisture etc got in there would it come out after a short bit, especially if winter driven?

Yes that's true, there is not the same adhesive contact as the original.

The strip does fit into holes in the bumper at the ends, and the whole thing is in the channel, so I'm not too worried about it falling out. Time will tell though, and I can always re tape it.

Water and dirt do get behind there. When I took the original peice out years ago, a lot of the adhesive was already not sticking anymore.

yes, after 16 years of being outside i think thats going to happen.

hey billcu, im going to do a sort of "how to" thread on this. do you mind if i do so. even though you where to first to post. figured i would ask.

I realize after 16 yrs theres probably going to be some unstuck spots/junk, but I also don't want to do it and have it fall out completely after the first winter ;)

I don't mind, you could have even just added your experience here if you wanted, I didn't cover the door strips or the details of removing the strips, just a few photos about putting it on the bumper.

This has been brought up a few times before, it's good to keep it current.:D
