Try wrapping a piece of fuel or heater hose around it. You can cut the hose length wise with a razor and slide it over the cable and use wire ties to hold it in place. I have been doing this for several of my cars on the stainless steel brake lines, to make suere they dont rub on something.
As long as it hasn't rubbed through the sheath on the cable then its OK and you can just do like Leo said. If the cable has been exposed then you'll need to replace that section.
