I've been working on a Black on Black 95 LSC for someone not affiliated with any forums. The power windows don't go down. Just a lot of clucking as the window tries to go down. So I removed it and replaced it with one from my 97 parts car. The bolt hole match up, but it seems like the motor doesn't engage the window. Below is a i pic of both motors. The one on top is from my 97 parts car. The one on the bottom is from the 95. Any ideas?

I believe if you pop off the metal cover surrounding that center gear, you will find a bunch of plastic shavings... Clean them out and put three pieces of plastic/wood/metal into the three holes. There is a ford part to repair that, but few use it.

I was hoping to do a direct replacement. What do you mean by (put three pieces of plastic/wood/metal into the three holes)?

I would have just spent the 35 dollars on a new window motor instead of messing with this, but that's just me.

According to a couple parts companies' catalogs Gen 2 has a different part number assigned to their window motors than does Gen 1 so it could be that they are not absolutely interchangeable.

Yea GMAN, the plastic bushings are a "fuse" so the motor has some cushion. I have seen people use metal nuts to put in their place. But I would recommend some kind of plastic or piece of wooden dowel. Ideally though, replace them with th correct bushings. Heck you might be able to take them from your 97 motor.

When you take the metal cover off you'll see the 3 plastic pieces that allow the window to operate. They sell a HELP kit everywhere and I got one for my 95 There are( 3 )1/2 X 1/2" round pcs in the kit. They worker good for 6 months. For over 20 years I've been making my own out of delrin rod that last. About $6-7 at most auto stores for the kit. These motors seem to last, just the bushings go bad :D

Guys, after fiddling with it a little more, the other motors bolted right in and works perfectly. I just didn't have them aligned properly. So to answer my own question, 97-98 power window motors will work in a gen one. I wasn't ready to do any rebuilding.

"Rebuilding" the motors is sooper dooper unbelievably simple! Just take the back off the motor, clean out the plastic shavings, install new bushings (Auto Zone, Advance, and most other parts stores have them in the help section), grease it, and put it back in the door. I just did all four on the Explorer and it only cost me $12 worth of bushings and a few hours labor. Piece of cake.
