Hello all! I just bought my first Mark VIII this morning and I love it. The car seems like it is in excellent shape. I found this site cause I was doing a google search to find out what an embkem on this thing meant and it lead me here! Seems like a great place for info from people who really know their stuff.

So that leads me to my first question here. This car has an exhaust smell very bad in the car. It smells like bad exhaust even when the car isn't running ?!? Its actually saturated in the interior I think cause it doesn't get any worse with the car running and there are no leaks in the floor or trunk to let fumes in. You can actually smell it in the carpet and seats etc. Does anybody have any suggestions what I can use to clean that out?

Also speaking of the exhaust. The car has an aftermarket exhaust on it that sounds like complete crap. It has to go ASAP!!! I was searching on here and found that the original mufflers on these cars are an odd shape/set up. It looks like I will have to replace everything cause the "aftermarket" setup goes all the way up to the converters. Are the mufflers readily available or do they have to come from Lincoln? Does anybody have a rough idea what it would cost in an exhaust shop for a converter back stock system?

I don't know what you have but it sounds like you might just need an X-pipe or double X and then some good mufflers. I would stay away from stock if at all possible. We would need to see pictures of what you have to really help.

Always remember that when you have a question about something. It helps us out a lot when we can actually see and read your question.

Welcome to the site also!

It sounds like the previous owner gutted the catalytic converters to me.

That can make the exhaust smell terrible.

I don't know where you are located state wise... but I'm sure you could find a complete stock exhuast from a junked lincoln if you want a quiet stock system.

As far as the odor... get some of this stuff. Before treating with that product I would clean your carpets with a product like Zep High Traffic. Exhaust smell needs to be removed in a different way than a mold smell, the mold smell comes from actual bacteria growing in our interior so a product just kills it... exhaust odor is actual a particulate matter that has attached itself to the material, cleaning is the key!

Thanks for the info Kustomizingkid that is good to know and I'm in maryland. I tried to explain the best I could : / There is no exhaust leak. At least there isn't now. The smell is just regular fumes notlike the sulphurish smell like with a bad converter. According my friends scanner the cats are intact.

I called the woman that sold me the car to try to get more info and she told me that the car had been left running overnight in a garage and that's where the exhaust smell came from. She claims the orginal exhaust didn't leak and that the aftermarket one has only been on for a short time. She didn't really seem to know much about it. She kind of got pissed when I asked if there was somebody I could contact that would know more about it : /

I haven't taken any pics yet. The car was pretty dusty when I bought it and I cleaned it up unitl the sun went down yesterday. Now today its raining : /

So it smells like rotten eggs?

No. I said its NOT like the sulphur smell you get from bad cats. Sorry my typing sucked there. The seller said it was ran overnight in a garage. That kinda makes sense to me. It smells like regular old exhuast but doesn't get any better or worse with the car running. The smell is trapped in the intereior fabric like kustomizing kid described.

Running in a closed garage all night, and when you asked if someone else knew about it she irrationally got mad... hate to say it but someone might have killed themselves in your car...

If you are willing to spring for shipping this is one of the best carpet cleaners I have EVER used... and if you put an order in grab some of this to finish the complete cleaning.

For protecting your interior plastics and vinyls I'd recommend either this or this. Either of those products will help removes the odor from the plastic and vinyl materials in your interior and protect them while giving them a good look.

That what I'm starting to wonder about myself. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. The title had a mans name on it and was signed. There were some spare parts in the trunk and a note about what they are and how rare some of them are. Its starting to freak me out. I should have bought the 1995 she was selling : / But it wasn't as nice as this one.

Thanks on the heads up on the products too!

No problem... to be honest it really wouldn't bother me if someone killed themselves in a car that I now owned... I mean so what...

If you have any detailing related questions feel free to ask me...

My gf is ragging on me about it lol. She is calling the car "Christine" and "The Devils Valentine" cause the last 6 digits of the VIN are 666214 and its like a dark blood red on the outside lol.

Thanks again for all the detail info. I see you are going into business for yourself. Good luck with that!

Wow... that is awesome... a Red Mark with 666 in the Vin and someone killed themselves in it... wow!

Thanks for the luck, I'm gonna need it... I believe that hard work and determination will always prevail, but a little luck can go a long way!

I just drove it to go fill up the gas tank. I seafoamed it last night and it almost ran out of gas. Oddly the exhaust sound much better today. Still sounds a little like a deep voiced person gargling at low cruise speeds (engine lugging RPMs) and it drones pretty bad at 1800-2000RPM. Overall though its alot better. I may just keep it on there for a while and see what happens. It may have been all fouled inside from idling so long : / I shot some crappy rain pics just so you get the idea of what it looks like.

You have cobrastar emblems on it! Geno at lincolnmotorsports (LMS) might know more about the cars history/exhaust. If you want to trade for a factory setup(exhaust), i might be interested. I'm pretty sure the 96-97s are the same. Welcome to LVC!! You'll like it here.

Those emblems are actually how I found this site! LOL I wanted to know if they were factory or some option from another car. I googled descriptions of them and eventually found an image that was linked to this site : ) Thanks for the welcome! So far evrybody has been great and I see there is tons of info here.

So who is Geno? How can I get in touch with him to see if he knows anout this car?

DLF thanks for the link. I may just take you up on that. Now that the exhaust sounds a little better I think I'm goinng to wait a bit and see if it improves more. Maybe seafoam it again. Then I will go from there.

Who cares if it did. My dad picked up a Roadrunner for dirt cheap because the guys son had killed himself in the car, 22 to the brain and very little blood to clean up.
