No third gear.

It is an intermittent problem and it is worse when driven hard. Driving very slow it has no problem. I have changing the solenoid pack and the is no difference. It is a 2002 v6. The code sometimes comes up and it is third gear bad ratio and bad solenoid electrical. Anyone have any ideas? The transmission has been serviced regularly.

Could be an internal problem. I'm pretty darn sure your problem lies in the valve body.

What makes you think it is the valve body and I would just need to replace the valve body with a remanufactured one?

Can you select 3rd manually? How does it feel if you can?

Valve bodies and solenoids are notorious on these cars, especially on gen 1's. As Robot said, put the shifter into 3 and see if the car will shift into 3rd gear; or if you're equipped with SST, side over to SST mode and push one up into 3rd.

Third gear is the same. It will not go in manually intermittently.
