Hello guys/gals.

Here is the story, looking at a 97 Mark VIII LSC. It has 86K miles. Has missing top part of window switches (both sides). Broken driver seat control panel. The clips that hold the visors in place are missing ( "U" type plastic piece) Telescoping steering wheel only moves in and out, but not up and down. Check engine light is on. I turned on the car and let it run for about 20 minutes, temp needle goes to the middle and stays there, but every now and then it feels like if a cylinder dies just for a fraction of a second (like if it missed a fire or something like that). When i put it in drive, you can feel it shake a bit. I cranked the car a few times, and the starter or something related didn't sound very solid. i guess if i had to explain it, it sounded like a marble was loose as soon as i let it stop cranking, but the engine starts.. Oh yeah, and when i se the temp to 90 degrees, there was no hot air ????? My question is, are these easy fixes ?? or are these signs that the car need lots of TLC ???? Not to sounds pushy or anything, but quick help would be great since I kinda have to decide tonight Tuesday (1/10/06) if I plan on getting it, or if I keep fishing for one.

It is black on black, w/ sunroof, (no heated seats)

How much does he want for it? and thats in pretty bad condition for a 97...

Actually we haven't discussed price. I was to look at the car and then shoot him what I think its worth. Well yeah it does have some issues, but I figured any 97 car is gonna have some issues. So how difficult do you guys think it would be to fix the heater and telescoping steering ???
Thanks...

Thanks for the welcome. I have always liked the Mark VIII, but not until now, have I had the opportunity to consider one.

So what are the basic things that I should look for or at when looking at a Mark VIII ???? If I remember correctly I believe the air suspension on these are very prone to failing, but I guess you guys would be the experts on tips of what to look for...
Thanks...

sounds to me like you have a cracked boot, blend door needs to be replaced, and a lot of cosmetic stuff that needs to be replaced. The only thing that car has going for it is the low mileage. I'd offer 2K just because you can't be certain how bad the car really is (but I think a lot of that is minor).

if all those problems arise now, just think what will show its ugly head when u get it. i'd keep shopping.

not necessarily, could just be a fluke. I know a lot of cars when you first buy them that all sorts of stupid things go wrong. Its to his advantage because he can use this against the seller to bring the price down. The drive train is the most expensive yet the most reliable in these cars. All that other stuff is minor and can be fixed on a weekend.

I agree with Dave... A lot of little problems that can be fixed. It's worth it if the price is low enough and you don't mind turning a wrench and doing the work yourself.

There is enough help on this site to get you through the problems.

I dont mind turning a few wrenches, not much space under the hood. I looked at the firewall to see how much space there is, and i think I pan fit my pinnky finger in there. Well I am gonna try and run codes on it, I'll look at it again and see if i can find any other problems with it..
Thanks...

its not as tight under there as you think, the worst may be replacing the o2's, and the blend door. I'm sure if you go to a meet that we have plenty of guys that would help you out.

What is "the blend door" ???? Yeah I would like to make it to one of your guys meet. How often and where do you have them ?? I am located in Bellflower CA, (southern cali). Well I guess I am back to the drawing board since I didn't end up picking up that Mark VIII...:(

Oh yeah, are there any things in specific I should look for when looking at a 97~98 Mark VIII. Things I should look out for ???
Thanks...
:)

Welcome,

Super Coupe fan? :wrench

Before you buy, read up on the differences of Gen. Is(93-96) and IIs(97-98). Body styles and colors are up to the individual. In '96 VIII's went OBDII, sleek lines and more availible "dress up" parts. '98's have the better transmission, Mercon 5 synthetic oil, updated seals and better internals. Gen. II's heads are sized a little large for the street,(Like most FOMOCO 4V engines of the past) Gen. I's reportedly have a better intake design, could be related to over all flow. Have plenty of refreshments on hand and visine while reading up in the search areas.

Well I know that the Mark VIII has to be either a 97 or a 98. I didn't know that the 98s had the better internals. How much of a diffence is there ??? I am leaning towards an LSC but even if its not an LSC as long as its in good condition and i like it i'll take it. I have tried to do some research, but I didn't find much.. can u point me towards the right places where to do some research ???
Thanks...

Not to mention reviewing the search section here. Be sure to sample the tech. sections to get a feel of associated repairs and costs. The listed sites are just a sample of whats out there. I have a Gen II, and I like the look. Reminds me of Lincolns 1955 Futura. However sitting in the car and looking over the hood, your line of site to the front of the car is distant. In my '89 T-Bird I can see quite nicely over the hood to the area just in front of the car, nicely.
Oh yeah, the LSC question . . .
I went with an LSC because of badgeing. My insurance, went up the same digits as the name. If your gonna cruise factory style, go LSC. Should you choose to wrench on it, go base (top speed is limited higher). Chances are your gonna change out the exhaust. Which to me is the only real benefit. Perferated holes in the seat? whatever. To me it means a spill or odor is more likely to get trapped in the seat padding. But I still got a LSC.
