Whats up guys? I've looked into all of the different options for the exhaust on a pre '03 Ls, and have been wondering about installing exhaust cutouts (links below). It would be nice to be able to go from stock quiet to loud whenever i wanted, but I have a couple of questions:
1) Would it create any problems with not having back pressure? Floating valves?
2) Where should I put it? Before the cat, in between the cat and the resonator, or just before the muffler? Which would be the safest and sound the best?

Any help or comments would be appreciated
thanks

dont recommend either on an ls, if you were building a drag car than maybe, if you want an exhaust system go magna, borla, or flow. cat-back is what they sell. i have seen adverse effects when going open exhaust, the idea is to match your induction with your exhaust. open manifolds doesnt sound very clean anyways, sounds like an extreme exhaust leak. do a search on here, i think there are a few video clips with the different sounds. i think it may be the borla exhaust that is rather quiet while at lower rpms, but comes alive when you stomp on it. magnaflow i believe is more of an even deeper tone, and flow just sounds like a deep purr (flows are my favorite). look for vanderela or dvarela on here, he has the best sounding exhaust in my opinion. if you just want it stock and then loud at your convenience than put your y in there.

Definately go with a good cat-back system. "Race Readies" are designed for street legal drag cars. They have their purpose and "sounding cool" isn't one of them.

Cut outs are for either showing off or racing. Not a good idea for everyday driving and besides if your gonna do that don't cheap out . . . get the electronic ones! J/K Driving around w/ the exhaust open like that at speed or for an extended period of time will turn ur valves cherry red. Caution is advised!

I had an exhaust cutout on my SHO:

Say goodbye to your low end torque! The interior noise is horrid. The cast iron one with the remote cable you linked to from Summit Racing? That will rust badly in a matter of weeks.

Just get a decent set of mufflers.

borla

alright, so i've decided on not doing the cutouts haha anyway i got the idea from a post from quik and read somewhere that the ls sounded good without a muffler- but now it doesn't seem like such a good idea

thanks for the input

I think i wanna go borla. could I just do the mufflers? Which muffler would i need?

Yes, it is loud and does sound nice... but really not drivable for any period of time. The sound just resonates throughout the cabin too much.

You can just swap out the mufflers, a muffler shop should be able to get you measured and let you know what type/size you'd need. Actually, a custom exhaust shop should be able to make an entire custom cat back system for your car for about $300 if you provide the mufflers.

Hows the SHO compare the the LS, performance wise? The taurus sounds pretty nice, I was just never found of the styling.

The 89-95 SHO's are probably a bit faster than a 00-02 LS in the quarter... but the LS is much more balanced and handles better. The older SHO's had wicked understeer that you could balance out with swaping out the swaybars and stiffening the body. The V8 SHO's (96-99) were much more solid, especially at speed, but they were heavier and slower than the first two generations. The LS is an all around nice base of power and handling. Many SHO owners have graduated to the LS since it had what the SHO folks wanted... RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, stuff the SHO aspired to be but never was. One thing we wanted in common was a V8 sedan with a manual tranny. The SHO's are fun, fast, and pretty cheap to mod. My buddy is actually building a Gen IV SHO... stuffing a turbo'd SHO V8 motor into a 2000 Taurus SES. Should be fun.

You know .... I love my LS, but at speeds that I won't mention (fast).. my 98 SHO is rock solid on the road.

I am thinking if I lower the LS I might improve that though... just thinking out loud though.
