Hi everyone...

A minor issue with my '06 LS...

After never having an issue with my heated seats, about a week ago my driver's side quit working.

When I get into the car and hit the button for the heat, it comes on for about two seconds and goes out... any time after that that I hit the button, it comes on just long enough to illuminate and then goes out, and no heat...

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with this?

I tried to search the forums but either this isnt a common symptom, or I am a lousy researcher, so thank you all for the help in advance!

Yes, if you search, it's all been covered.

Common problems
1. Fan failure. You won't hear the fan start, and the system will turn off in just a second or two.
2. crushed seat cushion duct (rare for 06, unless you are really fat). You will hear the fan until it shuts down. It should take more than a couple of seconds for it to shut down the first time. (Note that after the first shutdown, it will shut off almost instantly when you try to turn it back on, until you turn the car off and restart.)
3. Disconnected duct to the seat back cushion. You'll hear the fan briefly before shutdown.
4. Completely clogged seat filter. You'll hear the fan for a few seconds. Remove the filter and restart the car to see if this is it.

If it's not one of those things, you'll need a good code scanner to find out what's wrong.

This could possibly be caused by an airflow issue. Either too much, or too little air flowing through the ductwork in the seat. First try pulling the filter on the fan unit under the seat, and see if that helps. It just twist locks in place on the fan.

If that doesn't work, then check where the ductwork goes from the seat bottom, to the seat back. Sometimes the zip tie gets loose, and the ductwork pops apart. This was my issue, and is more prevalent if you recline the seat alot, or use the easy exit feature. To replace the zip tie, you have to remove the seat back. Pull straight out on the bottom, at the corners, to pop it loose. Then lift straight up on the bottom of the seat back, (not out), while pushing firmly in on the top of the seat back. You have to be wary of the seat back clips, they are easy to break.

If both of these check out, then there is a TSB the dealer can pull for you, doing an Oasis Report. You'll need your VIN. There is a plastic duct box inside the seat cusion, that can get crushed, which causes a restriction. The part is only $30, but it requires dismantling the seat, and pulling the bottom seat cover to get to it. Somewhat challenging, and very labor intensive.

Hope this helps

Sorry to step on you Joe, I'm a slow typer.

Thanks guys.

Thanks alot for the insight folks.

I am pretty sure that the fan does not come on when I push the button so I will start there. I suppose I will look up the fuse number and check there first.

As always, I appreciate your help -- again I apologize that I couldnt find anything through the forum search (?), I will try the google search tip next time.

Unfortunately, fan failure is not unheard of. In fact, I have a dead passenger side fan on my LS right now. Ford only sells the entire assembly. Driver's side is about $209.

Holy Crap, lol... My Mk VII was the last car I could basically go find four other Fords with the same parts for cheap, and then my MK VIII was easy to repair because there seemed to be so many of them in local yards, but this LS, it stays pricey..

Kudos again to you guys,

B

I too have a similar problem. If I get in the car and turn the heated seats on and then exit the car the heated seats will stay on, but about 5 minutes after I get say down it will shut off. I'm assuming that's a duct problem?

That's right. PM your e-mail address to me and tonight I'll send you the TSB with instructions on how to fix this.

Post 14 in the linked thread shows the parts.

Yep; it can throw a code, but it'll be in the Ford-specific code extension, so the generic CAN scanners won't be able to read it (or, at least, make sense of it).

This is quite odd. My passenger seat failed to stay on this morning. It stayed on for about a minute while my 6-year old daughter was riding shotgun, then shut off. After I dropped her off for school I stopped for gas then I turned it back on. It stayed on for about 5 minutes then shut off. Nobody hardly rides shotgun in my car so I am doubting the duct is crushed. I guess I'll check the filter and the seat back duct connection. Are these accessible from the rear floorboard?

The filter is.
You'll probably have to take the seat back access panel off to check the duct.

Holding the panel at bottom center, pull rearward (not up) until both lower attachments are disengaged.

While pushing in at the top of the panel, slide the panel down to disengage the upper J-hooks.

Remove the panel.

How can "crushed seat cushion ducts" be identified?

Ok. In this case it seems to be shutting off even with no weight on the seat. The only thing that usually occupies my passenger seat is parcel items less than 10 pounds. I'm thinking its filter or rear duct. We shall see. *snaps glove*

just needs a little duct tape, that's all ...

it snapped back together alright. Then, another zip tie around the bottom part and a couple zip ties through each vertically holding them together. That B ain't goin' anywhere.

The plane, though... methinks it's going down.

We are currently delayed due to a slight mechanical problem,
however we should be able to Duct Tape it and be on our way shortly ...
We appreciate your patience and thank you for flying Asia Discount Airlines."
