Cadillac: Lincoln's raison d'etre

Lincoln - Named after Abraham Lincoln, whom Henry Leland (the company's founder) voted for in the first presidential election he was able to vote on. The company was made to compete directly against Cadillac, a company Leland also founded but left over disagreements with GM management.

Except now Lincoln claims they are not going to move upmarket with Caddy. Caddy is now trying to compete with BMW/Mercedes/Lexus. Since Ford already does this with Jaguar and Range Rover (and even higher up the chain with Aston Martin) it would appear that Lincoln's most likely direct competitor is Buick.

Buick...... wtf...... I mean come on!!?!..... buick is an extinct brand, has anyone seen the new aviator? IMO i think its hideous... *yawn*, my next car definately is going to be a s type r... thats the closest i'll ever get to a LS with 400hp.

Actually, it's deeper than that. The Detroit Automobile Company failed in 1900, only to be revived by its chief mechanic, who named it after himself, resulting in the birth of the Henry Ford Company. After a disagreement between Ford and his investors, he left the company; in preparation for liquidation, the investors brought in one Henry Leland to appraise the equipment for sale. Leland, however, talked them into restarting the company again, which, subsequently, was named Cadillac.

After Leland left Cadillac he formed Lincoln; when Lincoln failed in 1921, Henry Ford bought it.

So Ford was instumental if the birth of Cadillac, and Leland was instrumental in the birth of Lincoln.

And then we can throw in the Dodge Brothers building engines for both companies...

Unfortunately, he may be correct. Just look at what you're seeing out there. Lincoln has absolutely nothing to offer to many of the Cadillac offerings. I mean nothing. When it comes to high performance luxury vehicles, you had better look to one of the sister companies because you won't find it with Lincoln. Not until there is a major shift in management.
