    Air suspension leak.

Maybe ten years ago I had a leak that got so bad, the pump was running constantly, but it was unable to keep the car up while driving. I finally traced that to the right front airbag, which suffered ozone-cracks around the lower portion. The cracks didn't leak all the time. The cracks opened up...

    Steering fluid leak

The car was parked for a couple months. Today there was that steering whine from lack of fluid. The reservoir was very low. I added about 5 or 6 ounces tranny fluid... There's a good sized oil stain on the asphalt. There has been a little smoke under the hood for the last couple thousand miles...

    Fuel pump noise

1988 Mk7 LSC. My fuel gauge has been a problem so I keep the tank filled. Recently I take a 300 mile round trip every week, over the mountains, filling it before I leave. At 20 MPG, the car's range should be around 400 miles, but I stop for gas and fill it on the return trip, just to be sure...

    Radio questions

I've had some dashboard electrical problems (tach and gas gauge sometimes don't work with the headlights on) so I'm devoting time to it. I've been wanting to update this cassette / radio too. I pulled the radio out. There was something behind it. A small amplifier? It was not secured. It's just...

Remove transmission fluid from dipstick tube

The plastic bushing on this throttle kickdown / TV cable finally failed, so to be brief, I've spent time on the transmission. The fluid is at least 150,000 miles old, it's dark but it isn't burnt or bad smelling.. Hang a magnet in it overnight, and there's a little bit of very fine metal dust...

    '88 Mk7 glove box Owner's Guide

Pages are starting to un-glue from the spine, on this little 4"x8" paperback booklet. 230 pages of good information. So, I'm going to scan it to a PDF file, hopefully using Optical Character Recognition, so it can be searched for words. I'd like to share the digital book with anyone who wants...

    Gas gauge ... calibrate?

Haven't driven this '88 LCS much in the last few months. Can't recall the last time I bought gas. I took a long drive today, several hundred miles. First thing was to gas-up, and seeing about 3/4 tank according to the gauge, I bought just a few gallons. To make a long story short, after a few...

    windshield washer check valve.

My washer hasn't worked for a year or so, but now that roads are wet and sloppy, I want to fix it. Opened the hood. Reservoir is half full. Pulled the hoses from the wiper T connection. There was a drip-dribble of fluid. Then I see fluid on the firewall. Just in front of the driver, the hose...

    Window lubrication?

88 Mk7. One day, without any warning, my passenger window rolled up very slowly, and died. At least I thought it died. But yesterday I hit the button accidentally, and the window moved down a hair. But it moves very, very slowly. I opened it an inch. Not wanting to chance it being stuck open, I...

    My first dent

This '88 MK7 LSC had a nice, straight body before a big tree branch fell from about 30 feet, and creamed my left rear pillar. I eventually found the LSC emblem, and no glass was broken, so I'm grateful. No idea what, if anything, to do about it.

    Tachometer is acting up.

1988 LSC. My tach works fine unless I turn on the headlights. With headlights on, the tachometer lamp is dark. The rest of the dash is illuminated as normal. Also, with the headlights are on, the tach itself doesn't function. The dial indicator stays on zero. Everything else works. Turn off...

    Flow through ventilation

'88 LSC I'm messing around with things and wondered if this car even has flow through ventilation. There should be vents somewhere so that, for instance, when a door is closed air can escape rather than create pressure. I cannot find the air vents or exit(s). Anyone know where they are?

    Driver armrest

The driver's left armrest (on the door) has always bothered me a little, basically because it's slippery, positioned wrong for my arm length (?), and... anyways my elbow / forearm is always slipping off of it. On long drives it's annoying, and I take a lot of long rides. I looked on Amazon...

    Transmission fluid level sensitivity

'88 LSC, 5.0 HO, AOD. As long as I can remember, the transmission seemed to slip right around 70mph, uphill on a freeway. Not faster and not slower. It would last only a short moment.. less than half a second.. and happen perhaps once or twice per mile. But sometimes traveling the same road it...

    Trunk key cover repair

My key cover plate was worn on it's edge, from thousands of openings over the years. The cover would not stay up and out of the way of the key, so it took two hands to insert a key. It is designed to be caught by the top edge of the tapered "ramp". (see pix) The wear can't be repaired by...

    fuel injectors

Having saved about $800 by replacing a heater core myself, I be feelin' my oats and decided to take on the injectors. Top pic is the injector ports. Carbon is trying to close off all the ports. As much carbon as there is now, much of it in the ports' centers must have broken off and fallen...

    Heater core replacement

When I took the car to the shop, the guy told me the heater core was leaking. I was surprised about that and couldn't believe it at first. But sure enough, when I got the car back it was steaming up the windows. Having replaced a really corroded radiator (likely the original one) a couple years...

    Seafoam

Preparing for my current major tuneup, I bought some Seafoam. I'm not a fan of any "additives" but after reading up on it, it seems like a good way to loosen any crankcase carbon / varnish deposits before I change the oil and oil filter. This Seafoam stuff appears to be a light oil with a lot...

    Failed the Fuel Evaporative Test

The car almost passed smog, but is still high hydrocarbons. Max 73, measured 79 (15mph) Max 56, measured 63 (25mph) That part's ok with me.. Idle is not perfectly smooth. There's a miss. My maintenance efforts have been minimal at best for years and tons of miles, and I'm sure an oil + filter...

Cold idle problem gets worse and worser..

'88 LSC, all stock, ran fine in all respects. ----------- Previously, this car starts and idles just by turning the key. About 6 weeks ago, the cold engine died at idle. Upon starting, RPM dropped a bit too low, coughed a bit, and threatened to die... and then died. On the second or third try...
