Lincoln LS Water Pump

Hey everyone - I have a 2000 Lincoln LS that I've taken care of in every way I can. Serviced every 3 to 6 months at the Ford Dealership (where it's been serviced it's entire life, same one too), I get every recommended bit of maintenance on it and have spent more on the car than it's worth. But I love the thing, and bought it from my Aunt whom I promised I would take care of it. It's a 5 speed manual V6, and only has about 81k on it.
But lately, I've noticed that parts are harder to come by and now the dealership is saying that can't fix it because they can't find a part anywhere. I need a hydraulic coolant pump solenoid (part no. XW4Z3783CA), at least that's what the dealership told me.
1) Does anyone know where I can find one?
2) How do you all deal with parts that are discontinued and hard to find?

I've checked rockauto, carparts.com, and even looked at getting the part from the Thunderbird, which I've been told share some parts with the LS.
 
Well, that title is very misleading. The water pump has nothing to do with the hydraulic fan pump.

How are you affording to keep the LS with a dealer working on it? Find a good local independent mechanic if you aren't doing it yourself. Find an independent with some Jaguar experience. AFAIK, you can't get the actuator new anymore. For a while, you could buy some new hydraulic fan pumps that had new actuators installed, but I think those are gone now too. You will have to buy a "rebuilt" actuator. Those are available. The dealer is unlikely to be willing to put one in for you though. Find a good independent that will.
 
I bought mine off Ebay I got a pretty good deal but see some are going for a ridiculous price
 
You could also take yours out and try cleaning it ....after you or mechanic shop are done cleaning it out ...test ot with 12V of electricity...the solenoid should make a clickinclocking sound letting you know the solenoid is loose and working properly...Note: if your AC system isn't functioning properly and/or properly filled with Refrigerant this will effect your hydraulic cooling pump actuator and will prevent the fan to kick into high speed upon turning on AC...after purchasing the used actuator I cleaning the existing actuator and it worked flawless

Well, that's a little crossed.

The 2000-2002 have hydraulic fans, with hydraulic fan pumps.
The 2003-2006 have electric fans. Note that there is no electric fan pump. No hydraulic fan on the 2nd gen.
Conversion to the 2nd gen (2003-2006) electric fan is not as simple as you would hope. A custom electronic circuit is required to adapt the control signal for the hydraulic fan actuator to the control signal needed for the electric fan. It is easier to adapt the first gen hydraulic fan system to an aftermarket electric fan, but you will lose the variable speed fan, instead you will then just have an on/off fan.

Joegr said it all ...2000-2002 Hydraulic 2003-2006 Electric...If you're not Mechanically inclined to take the actuator out and clean it , I'm sure a shop would be able to do it for a fair price...if I had a lift I would be able to do it under 30 minutes and that includes the draining of the reservoir...it's harder when you're on you back under a car

Forgot to ask ....your AC is running properly?
I'm sure if you take it out and clean it with choke cleaner and get all the grit out of it it will work like new...remember you or the shop needs to bench test it with 12V

I'll keep looking, but all I've seen so far is the assembly and not the solenoid which kind of sucks. But thanks!
Just in case you don't know what it looks like here is the one I purchased ...I always wondered if the Jeep Cherokees Actuator would work in the Lincoln LS ( Thinking out loud again) lol

I'm really not very mechanically inclined, unfortunately. Haven't done anything since college, and that was things like an oil change...
I called a couple of places and they just told me they couldn't do it. It's just going to take some calling shops to figure it out.

So the AC works for about 30 minutes but can't be at full blast. I can only drive it for about 30 minutes at a time before the temperature gauge starts to go up. If it goes up too high I'll sometimes pop it into neutral, turn off the car, and coast down a hill or something, then turn on the heat. Lol.
I would assume that the dealership where I got it serviced did something like that, and it didn't work. They kept it for about 3 weeks trying multiple things.

Just get it converted to electric fan and be done with it. I kept mine in the garage all summer due to it being over 90 every day when I would have used it for a 100 mile trip (each way).. I can't afford to have it go belly up in traffic that could last an hour before getting back up to free cooling mode (via driving airflow at highway speeds) and my car is likely on its last year, so I just got back to driving it to my hometown on weekends again. It's way too much to worry about for me with 2 other cars available with electric cooling fans. Now if I had a way to get George's [@Heyjewell] 2000 from NorCal to New Hampshire, I might move my drive train and all things needed to convert his 2000 Automatic to my own drive train, but my pinch seams are gone from where the jack would pick up the car. In my experience, each time my car has had a cooling fan pump solenoid fail on me, it was in the 90s outside and I got stuck in highway traffic that was stopped. That is why I stopped driving it when it is hot like that outside.

I found a local small shop that specializes in Jaguar and other British brands, and he recommended changing it to the electric fan too. I'm taking it up there and Monday and he's going to take a look. I'll keep you all posted and thanks for the help and recommendations!

Change of subject- I've been collecting the names of everyone who recently has mentioned owning a manual LS, aminslincoln, your #8. My best hot car story: I'm diving my sons just purchased BLACK LS home on 12 lane wide Roosevelt Blvd in stop and go traffic on a 90 degree, 90% humidity day. I figured out how lower the windows, no problem, but it was still hot in that car. Knowing the A/C didn't work, I searched for something that said "fan" or at least had a picture of one on it. I found it and pressed it, and it gradually accelerated to fill tilt blowing on me even hotter air. As this was my first time driving an LS, I was now confronted with "how to I turn the thing OFF! Even growing up near the Mojave Desert didn't prepare me for this. This was my introduction to a malfunctioning DCC.

LOOOOOL. That's hilarious. I'm still fascinated how many features this car had for the time. I had no idea that it had rain sensing wipers until I was driving along one day when it started raining and the windshield wipers were just on... Then I was like, wait what!? More of a rain than hot car story. It does have its problems with AC though.
There are only 8 people with 5 speeds on this site?! I knew they were hard to come by but damn.

Nice! Glad to see there are more out there still running. Mine only has 88k (misstated the mileage above as 81k and realized it when I got the car back) and hoping I can make it last. But I'm getting a second car, starting the search next week, because the Lincoln has been in the shop a lot lately, but I do want something new, getting that new car itch ya know. Gonna keep it as a second car for a while I think, but we'll see.
 
May I make an observation? Taking your Lincoln to the shop and making new car payments is counter intuitive. Our Lincoln has been reliable transportation for the last 3 years, but all those luxuries and occasional 'bumps and grinds' will either drive you to the poorhouse if taken to the shop, give you enough to do to take you mind off the new car itch or drive you to distraction. Unless you drive an awful lot, treat your Lincoln as a new car and through this website, learn to work on it yourself. Look for threads on whatever problem your having, if you don't find it, start a new thread. Be forewarned, everyone here gets annoyed at topics covered by already existing threads. Joegr is such an authority, I think he invented the LS. For clutch issues (which you should not be having for a looong time) milehighmikey has the knowledge. As for me, my daily drivers are a pair of mid '90's Escorts, both of which are maintained well enough that I would not give a second thought to driving one cross country at a moments notice. The reason I have two, is that one is approaching 300.000 miles and will be "semi retired" and kept as a show car.
