Washer button question

On the 97 Mark VIII does the long prong on the windshield washer button slide into the up or the bottom side of the hole in the stalk? Want to be sure before I latch in the replacement one. How does one get them out in the first place?

The button will only lock in when clocked correctly, that said,
I believe the long tab goes in to contact points position. I have not have to remove mine since I put one in but it looks like a thin piece of sheet metal would be slipped in along the side and pried slightly until the little plastic claw lets go.

Thank you! With that clue in hand I took a close look at the tab setup and can just see where those two contacts have been touching. The long tang looks like it goes in the bottom.
