Differential fluid

The manual says to change it every 150K miles, but later it also says that it never needs to be changed.

Rear axles and power take off (PTO) units containing synthetic lubricant and light duty trucks equipped
with Ford-design axles are lubricated for life. These lubricants are not to be checked or changed unless
a leak is suspected, service is required or the axle assembly has been submerged in water. The axle
and PTO lubricant should be changed anytime the axle and PTO have been submerged in water

The sevice tech at my Oil/Lube place told me during my 100-105k engine oil replacement.
Charged me $69.00 bucks (I think it was $69?? He started at $99.00). He tried his darndest
to give me every "lame" excuse to charge me something "extra" (besides the engine oil change).
He even showed me his "finger" with the "supposed" metal-filings/diff-contiminated residue ... as proof.

I in turn, wanted to show him "one of my own fingers" .... but didn't.
I gave him a bunch of excuses until he lowered the price down to $69.00.

Mine was pretty bad around 70k. Thought I had a leak, but I think it was just getting hot and coming out the vent. I'd definitely do it before 150k. I have enough to worry about, I wouldn't want to add a new rear end to that list.

What is the recommended fluid for the diff?

BTW- I had a tech tell me that it should be changed at every oil change....for $70. Yeah....right.

Owner's manual says:
Motorcraft SAE
75W-90 Fuel
Efficient High
Performance
Synthetic Rear Axle
Lubricant

I think Ford sent something out a little while back saying it was okay to go with a heavier weight if yours was noisy, but I'm not sure about that.
