Transmission Question

X2 on dirtydog, Allen know his stuff.
If you are going to order ford parts, Steve at tousley is great; he is also the SVT/ford racing specialist.
In most cases they have the best ford prices you can find.

IMHO, you don't need a kit. A simple do-it-yourself j-mod (which you can customize to any lever you prefer) is all you need, cheaper, and you will be impressed with the results.

If you really want to spend the money you save with the j-mod, a better torque converter will completely upgrade your car's performance to another level.

Oh, and ALAN over to DirtyDog Performance is a great guy to talk to for advice.

Good to know, I will have to give him shout. Thanks

I had nothing but problems with Allan. He told me my trans in the 93 was not worth doing anything to, was toast, and would not sell me a kit. After a few exchanges I decided to ignore him. He wanted to sell me a tranny I think, I'm not sure.

Since putting in a stand alone tranny cooler I have had zero problems, which is really why I have not done the work for the J-Mod yet.

Maybe there is/was something wrong your tranny? A '93 tranny is one of the FIRST 4R70W's and has had a TON of improvements over the years. Considering you can get a late-model 4R70W for under $200, it doesn't take many problems with your old one to be "not worth fixing".

I'm just sayin' - I don't know all the details of your particular situation, but I blew my intermediate one-way clutch in my '95, but I got a '97 tranny basically free, so that decision was particularly easy for me to make...

Well I've had it since April and and the only problem was a shudder on the 1-2 when she was really hot. That has gone away since my stand alone tranny cooler has been installed.

If your transmission was shuddering, that's why. Alan doesn't want to be liable for doing work on a transmission showing symptoms like that. He's a one man show. Ya can't blame a guy for taking precautions in his business practices. He's really not a bad guy from what I've heard.

I just wanted to buy the kit. I'm thousands of miles from him.

If you were just trying to order a kit, I'm completely confused why you weren't sold a kit. Did you try to order it on SCP?

I was too. I just bought the pieces after I figured out the process. With a lot of info from here among other places.

Back in the day, I installed a Baumann kit in the stock tranny of my '93.

I loved it! :D

What year trans do you have in the 95 now?

I put the '97 tranny in my 1995 'Bird. Interesting thing about it is my Mark VIII converter that used to 2nd gear brake stall at about 2200 now stalls at almost 2500 with the '97 tranny. Dirtydog (Alan) told me it's because the pressure is HIGHER with the later model tranny as opposed to the original '95 tranny and that causes the lock up clutch in the converter to release better increasing the effective stall.

I thought it was a pretty cool bonus!

How do you like the Baumman?

Love it, love it, love it. It is currently set on (I think) 4B, but I would like to bump it up more. I also have a built 97 trans with all the updates, his kit, Macron V, 2800 10" Edge stall, and a 28k cooler. I just need a fined pan with a drain plug and a temp sensor (already have the gauge). I currently just have the deep sump 97 pan.

With the 3.73:1 and posi I can chirp into 2nd fairly easy and light em up without holding the brakes. I am biased towards Baumann but I would definitely give Greg a call and talk to him. He won’t bull sh!t you, and help with any trouble shooting. Supposedly the story is he worked with Jerry (J Mod Jerry) on the development of the Trans.

My .02

Thats good since I have 93' also.

Good deal!! Are you doing the install or paying some one?

I might leave that to tranny guy , when it comes to digging in the valve body while on my back I feel I will screw something up . Plus my tranny guy is a ford tranny specialist so he can be done a little quicker than me..lol
