I don't know a whole lot about the second issue you're having which seems like an electrical issue, but slow cranking sounds to me like a dead/dying battery. I would check the voltage of the original battery, but maybe try draining the power from the ECU?

That's disappointing. Why Ford would take the time and money to engineer an engine bay as complicated as the first-gen LS and then label it not serviceable is beyond me. But I guess I understand the practical side of it, because man is this thing one tightly packed complicated machine.
