The Mitsubishi Eclipse was first manufactured in Illinois by a cooperative Chrysler/Mitsubishi group known as Diamond Star Manufacturing, along with its sister platform vehicles the Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser. They were all available in 4 trim levels, 2 non turbo, one turbo FWD and one Turbo AWD. They quickly established a reputation for rugged reliability, as well as ease of modification and spirited performance. When the 1st Generation ended in 1994, the Plymouth version was dropped from production. The DSM group was also dissolved in late 1994, but not before the design team had finished with the work to continue the Eclipse and it's remaining sibling the Talon thru one more generation. In late 1994 the restyled second generation Eclipse and Talon began production as 1995 models and in 1996 the line up was strengthened with the addition of a convertible Spyder in two trims, non turbo FWD and turbo FWD. In 1997 the Talon and Eclipse recieved an update in the form of new front and rear bumpers, spoilers, and body cladding for each version. When the Eagle brand name ceased production in 1998, the Eclipse was the sole survivor of the 3 originators and celebrated it's final year of production with stylish interior upgrades. Eclipse's 3rd generation came to market in the 2000 model year, larger and less performance oriented, and without the AWD and turbo 4 platform that had made its predecessor's famous. It was followed one year later by the redesigned Spyder convertible. Now the 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse will be taking over as the newest model but remaining true to its immediate ancestor will not offer the turbo or AWD options of the original 2 generations From: Directory > Automotive | | Lincoln vs Cadillac Forums
