John_P007 June 6th, 2004, 09:39 AM Has anyone done/heard about using factory nav. to watch DVD's? I was just wondering if anyone has done it and what the cost might be if it was do-able since I have factory nav. I know there was a company in NYC and I emailed them but they never got back to me. Also with the THX sound thought it might be NICE.....
Sifrino3 June 6th, 2004, 06:14 PM Custom, I would bet on it!

Wonder how much????? would be cool... anyone have an idea??
Joeychgo June 7th, 2004, 05:33 PM It should be possible, although you might lose or ahve to change your nav system in the process

the head unit cannot play movie DVDs - only data DVDs.

Don't they have DVD/Data DVD head unit's you could swap out :( ... how cool would that be and listing to the movie in your THX stereo.... COOL

COOLto be legal in most states the DVD player cannot play movies if the screen is in view of the driver - so the screen is disabled while the car isn't in park. So it's kinda moot point.
purelux June 28th, 2004, 11:17 PM Thats gotta be one of the more pointless laws since you can watch nav for 1 2 what if the passenger and not driver is watching it & 3 how is staring at a map less of a distraction than a movie?
Sifrino3 June 29th, 2004, 08:07 AM Its a good law. Not everyone needs to see you heading to work jacking off to some porno while there is a school bus riding right next to you. Its been seen here and its a little city. That is growning pretty fast!
JoshMcMadMac June 29th, 2004, 09:36 AM I am sure it can be done. They are selling rear view mirrors with small screens in them for TV stuff now too. They are designed for a backup camera, but they just wire it up differently for playing TV stuff. Just a matter of time and patience.

nope - the reader is different for the 'data only' formats.
chocolat1701 December 15th, 2005, 12:44 AM there is a way you can do it and it will give you 3 a/v inputs and its also integrated to the nav so you wont loose any functionality but it cost around 400 bucks but thats a small price to pay for this add on. just go to this page http://www.avelectronic.com/NavigationVid-Switcher.htm and you can get a device that works with the LS....
2001LS8Sport December 15th, 2005, 06:39 AM Quik is correct...the factory DVD reader WILL NOT read video DVD's. You may be able to make the factory head unit display a movie, but you will have to add another DVD player somewhere to get it to work.
beaups December 15th, 2005, 06:54 AM I did this under $100. do a search for my posts. Just used the NAV screen though, had to install a separate dvd player. the dvd rom for the nav is in the trunk so even if you could get it to play a movie, wouldn't do much good.
2006kmls December 15th, 2005, 07:07 AM I have the (avelectronics.com) unit and I have a DVD player with TV tuner and a back up camera that comes on in "reverse". All display on the factory THX nav screen. The whole thing installed is $800 or so.
ldc December 15th, 2005, 02:42 PM I bought the unit and plug and play harness from this company (http://www.tvandnav2go.com/ford-navigation-system.html), it was great no cutting of wires. Unit cost me $120, then $100 for the harness, and then bought a dvd ME3 for $100, now i can watch dvd on my nav screen in my nissan titan all for a little over $300.
