Supra Sam June 24th, 2005, 11:14 AM Hello all this is my first post and here is my first question. We have recently joined the Lincoln team picking up a '96 Continetal and a '93 Mark VIII. We love them both. The question is why does the Mark get so much better mileage than the Continental. Even with an 18 year old driving the Mark and his mom driving the Contiental, he can get better mileage. We drove from Houston to Austin last night. I got 24.6 in the Continental and my son got 27+ in the Mark. I am going off the computer telling me the mileage, not doing actual figuring.
Thanks and glad to be on the board!!!
mespock June 24th, 2005, 11:34 AM First off :W to :V ..
MPGs have been disucssed often in this forum so you may find more information searching.. But unlike other forums hey we don't mind reposting information and we are not going to tell you to go search to find your answers.
MPG - on my Mark VIIIs I have a 93 and a 95 Mark VIII -
I live in a Rural community in Southwest Wisconsin Pop around 3,000. City is about 1.5 miles end to end. Most of my driving is hwy or country roads so my mileage will be different from those driving in city traffic.
On average I get around 25+ to 26+ mpgs. I find in hwy driving I will ave. 29 to 32 mpgs all depending on how I am driving.
Last summer on a trip to Colorado I ave. 28.8 on I-80 ave speed about 85 mph ave between 75 to 95 mph.
In the mountains with out the O/D switch working so I could not trun the O/D off I averaged 25+ mpgs in the mountains. I was very impressed.
Once again :W
evillally June 24th, 2005, 11:49 AM I noticed WAY better mileage on my 02 Continental than my 98 Mark. My Mark sucks gas like a mofo!
02 Conti: 23 MPG!
Mark: 19.2 (I think the fuel computer is lying to me)
67Continental June 24th, 2005, 11:57 AM the engines are not entirely the same either.
mark0101 June 24th, 2005, 12:10 PM I don't know why but the mark does seem to give better gas mileage. I get 26 in the conti after putting the tornado fuel saver in. In the mark I get 28+
and :W to :V

Probably because your Mark has a 3.08 gear as opposed to your Conti's 3.56 gears.
Base Mark's get awesome mileage!!!
Supra Sam June 24th, 2005, 02:49 PM I was wondering if there was a signifcant difference in the gearing and from what I see above, there is.
67Continental June 24th, 2005, 03:07 PM nice capri.
98LSC32V June 24th, 2005, 03:18 PM The Continental is a heavier car and has lower gearing.
MarkOfDeath June 24th, 2005, 03:41 PM or the fact that pushing is easy than pulling :slam
Moes8 June 24th, 2005, 05:27 PM or the fact that pushing is easy than pulling :slam
ahahahaahahaa
do you really think a "rotating" engine knows it is pushing or pulling?
actually a fwd drivetrain should be a tad more efficient due to the direct connection between the engine and transmission.
marks get better mpg because like said before, the gearing, and also because the marks 4.6 is tuned slightly better than the conti's

Lincolns Own June 24th, 2005, 10:39 PM hey i got a quick question... my Mark is mostly city driven, highway about 6 times a week, just to get to some stores and what not, and it sits at 18.9 MPG. is that good or could it be better? what steps could i take to get it to do better? thanks :)
Lincolnpimpin June 24th, 2005, 11:04 PM All yall are lucky all I get is a maybe 18 MPG in town maybe and thats driving nice. But if I'm in HP AKA (Lead Foot) mode about 17 highway I have got a chance yet cause I'm still trying to show off my Mark in town, I love the looks I get from everyone, today this guy in a 2002 GT Mustarg gave me a long one. I just hope he wasn't looking at my donut.:)

How old was he?
jethro June 25th, 2005, 09:09 AM hmmm....some of these reported mpg's surprise me. my 98 conti will occasionally touch 25 something but almost always gets mid 24s on normal hiway driving. 600+ mile hiway trips running 80 or so gets 22-23. car has 60k miles and no mods yet, and i havent done a complete tune-up, but it seems to run well. guessing exhaust work will help mpg some, but I'd be thrilled to get anywhere near 28mpg.
Lincolns Own June 25th, 2005, 10:38 AM mid 40's? ... he had whitish gray hair
Dern Humpus June 25th, 2005, 02:02 PM lately my computer reads 14.5ish, its been all city driving with stoplights and stop signs like crazy. It doesnt help that I have a lead foot either.

It's alright I bet ya more than half of the people on this site does, I know I do. What can we do with these HotRod Lincolns. :Beer
MNEagle September 5th, 2005, 11:26 AM Did the Tornado make a difference? If so what kind of increase did you get?
Thanks
fossten September 5th, 2005, 11:41 AM My 93 got around 19 mpg to and from work, mix of highway and street, until I changed the o2 sensors and drilled my airbox and removed the silencer and resonator. Now I get over 21 on that same trip.
Highway trips I get over 28 mpg, up from 26.
JoeyLincolnMK8 September 5th, 2005, 12:27 PM i am reaching 20mpg. i am at 18.9mpg... but i do alil of everything... highway, city, agressive, and cruising driving.

are you saying the gearing in the contie is better then the gearing the Mark coust its bigger man is that what your saying just curious
klutch September 5th, 2005, 01:09 PM I may be wrong but I believe most fwd cars do have higher gears then rwd cars I dont keep up with wrong wheel drive though
rmac694203 September 5th, 2005, 01:54 PM In the city I usually average 14.5 or so with a heavy right foot. On the highway I can get about 26 mpg going 80
