Mark VIII Question

Hi There, Im new to these forums. I used to own a '95 Cougar, but have recently acquired a '96 Mark VIII.

One thing Im curious about that I cant seem to find an answer on is.. When I firsta start up there is a noise that sounds like grinding. it only happens for about 30 seconds before its stops, this also happens occasionally as I sit at a stop. Now I assume this has something to do with the Air Ride, but I'm probably wrong :)

Any suggestions would be most helpful

The bushings that go between the compressor for the air ride and the body might have deteriorated and you hear that sound as the compressor is running. Try starting up the car and listening in the front passenger wheel well and see if the noise comes from that general area.

Would this be an easy fix if this is the situation?

Should be. I THINK Arnott sells a kit for those bushings. Have a look around or call 'em and see..

Yup..that's them.

But like I said earlier - start up the car and have a listen in the fenderwell. If it's coming from there, those are probably your culprit.

You could also be hearing the timing chains clattering before the tensioners pump up.


Does it happen IMMEDIATLY upon start up....or a little later?

It's just your compressor adjusting your ride height. It always does that when you start up or stop at a light. Next time watch carefully as the car's height changes slightly.

Does it sound like "grinding" or just "a far away air compressor"?

Did that sound stupid?

I'm willing to bet its probably just the air compressor adjusting the level of the car - its a question many new Lincoln drivers ask.

PS - The "air leaving swimming tube" sound when you get out of your car is also normal.

Try using an anti-drainback oil filter...

It usually takes about 5 seconds for the sound to start then lasts about 10-15 seconds. It sounds like a compressor behind a wall. If its pretty normal then ill pay no more attention to it, should I replace those bushings anyway to be safe? Its a 96 with 64k. The previous owner didnt drive very much but I do know he took extra care with this car.

It's just your air ride compressor coming on, no biggie.

It's normal. Don't worry about it unless you DON'T hear it one day.

Anyone know where i can get a copy of the owners manual online? Im having some problems with my fuses and I need a copy of the fuse wiring diagram to make things right.

Some vehicles may exhibit a "hum" noise from the engine compartment when the Air Suspension System is leveling the vehicle after it becomes occupied. This condition may be caused by the compressor isolators not suspending the compressor properly, resulting in a "ground out" condition.

ACTION:
Replace all old compressor isolators with new compressor isolators.

SERVICE PROCEDURES

MARK VIII 1993-1994

1. Check air compressor assembly to determine if any object or harness (wiring or vacuum harness) is interfering with the free movement of the air compressor.

2. With the ignition "on" and the engine "off", lean on the front of the vehicle to activate the suspension air compressor and move the compressor to determine if the noise concern is coming from the air compressor.

3. If required, replace all four (4) of the compressor isolators and other related hardware found in the Service Kit (F4LY-5Z205-A).

^ 4 isolators
