100mph club...

I went to the track today after doing a tuneup a couple days ago. I only got 3 runs in but I almost hit the 100mph club. My fastest run was a 2.39 60 foot time, 14.5 at 99.45mph manually shifting. Car was flying down the track that run, i'm very happy with it's performance. I don't think there is another bolt on Mark VIII out there hitting that MPH without gears, torque converter, and/or headers and especially not without trac-loc!

that's a great time. mine runs 14.8 @ 97.3 mph with no trac lok and no mods.

Quite nice!

I'm impressed. Now imagine what you could do with 2.1 60 foot times! :steering

I was reading a post by BlackIce over @ www.markviii.org and he was explaining how slower launches (traction loss, not reaction time) can result in higher mph when ya cross the 1/4 mile. I can try to find the post if anyone wants.

edit>
actually i'm thinkin about it and it makes sense... If you have a great launch, you will be out there further down the track than with a worse launch, therefore you have less track left to build up mph. On the other hand, if you spin your tires too much and when it grabs you are actually going faster with more track to cover, you end up with a worse 60' time, a worse 1/4 mile time, but higher mph!! When you compare all your lowest E/Ts, the lowest mph means best launches, so mph isn't all where it's at. Maybe if ya could spin the tires up to 5 or 6k rpm before ya launch, you could get a 100mph easy (pretty stupid i know) E/T is what it's all about I think.

what do ya'll think?

also from what I've read, most motorcycles like mine (cruiser) with the mods i've done, average low 13s @ under 100 mph, cuz its light and it takes off fast!

Actually drag racing is not as simple as it seems. My car usually gets higher mph with a better launch, I have around 100 timeslips to prove it. My car is not setup for best ET's that's why I could care less what ET my car gets. I have street tires, no trac-loc, stock gears which make me hit 3rd before the traps, etc. The MPH of your car shows how much power it has and that's what's important for me. I have hit 14.3 before in better conditions but to me hitting 99.5mph is more of an achievement. Also, you can spin off the line halfway down the track in another Mark VIII good luck trying to hit 99mph... :steering

what do you have done to your car i have run 98 mph , with a k&n filter and x-pipe (stock mufflers and cats still on )

I have a custom burned SCT chip, stock LSC exhaust with Ultraflow mufflers and dual cutouts bypassing the 3rd cat, UPR Bigmouth conical, Mac crank pulley, Walbro 255lph fuel pump and gutted trunk. I also have MSD wires and Screamin Demon coil packs but they don't add power. Pretty much all stock and the SCT Chip didn't really help much in adding MPH in the 1/4 just in the 1/8th mile. I was able to do 98.6mph before I got the chip...

So basically the money spent on the chip could have been saved.
Did it at least firm up the shifting in the trans?
If so then you paid 300-400 for some added line pressure that a Free Jerry mod would have gotten you and a raised speed limiter??
If not from the custom tune, where do you think the power is coming from?

Good point. Not to argue, but I love it when people say STOCK, then rattle off a grocery list of mods, especially ones 'that don't add power'.

Stock? Yeah, right.

it's important to remember too that different tracks are going to give different times for the same setup. there's no gold standard track.

The chip gave me more power all throughout the rpm range except the upper rpm where I think it has too much timing advance. This helped my 1/8th mile ET and MPH but did little for the 1/4 mile MPH. The tranny shifts hard with the increased line pressure as well. Where is the power coming from? I think it's a combination of the mods I have done and the motor was strong from the factory. If I could use most of 3rd gear in the 1/4 mile (i.e. 4.30 gears) I think I could easily trap over 100mph.

I have some 4.56s with a locked rear end I'll let you have pretty cheap as long as I get your stock rear end back so that I can drive the car up to the corner to sell it.
