Being a new Mark VIII owner (1998), I'm not sure about this.

First, should the sound of the air pump be overly noisy? Sounds almost like a grind.

Second, should the air ride system always be on, or can it be turned off for normal driving?

The annoying "grinding" noise coming from your engine bay is normal.

Second, if you turn the suspension switch off during driving, the message center will alter you to either "Air ride disbale/ switch off" or "check air suspension"

There are aftermarket kits if you want to switch to coil suspension.

The noise you are referring to could also be a worn mounting bushing for the compressor. These bushings are replaceable. It could also be a sign that your compressor is on the way out, which also is replaceable ($125.00 rebuilt exchange). Mine has been moaning for the last two years, and I found it reassuring to let me know that is working, however I am going to be replacing my front struts and rebuilding the front end this week end so I am also going to replace the compressor and I should be good to go for another 135,000 miles. I got my stuff from American Air Suspension (Eddie).
The switch to turn you air system off is in the trunk, unless you are trying to see if your air suspension has leaks or is leaking you should leave it on.
