What is the actual name of the switch that turns on the brake lights when you press the brake and it also prevents the car from being shifted out of park. I think mine is going bad and I want to replace it before it dies and I cant get it out of park to get a new one.

Hi Klutch
To prevent the stop light szwitch burning out you need to by pass it with a relay, see Here (http://www.lincolnsonline.com/article114.html) for how to do it.

Thanks for the tip Dereck. I can't really tell from the pictures but does the stoplight switch make the pedal return? because sometimes my brake pedal wont return after depressing it and wondering if this could fix that problem also?

No, the boo switch has nothing to do with the pedal return. If you have that problem, it is either the vacuum booster or possibly the master cylinder.
