whatsupadrian April 23rd, 2005, 01:36 PM Well i bought a MAF adapter from KKM and took it to a metal shop and asked how much it would cost to make it. So we casted it and tried to make one and got pretty good results. The final cost was $20 because of the casting and all that but if i wanted more it would cost like $8 a piece for the adapters, add that to a K&N Fulter for $35 bucks. And you get an alternative to the KKM intake with a better quality filter for under $50. Does anyone see a problem with a casted aluminum MAF adapter?
Filter i used.

lsbit April 23rd, 2005, 10:16 PM Does anyone see a problem with a casted aluminum MAF adapter?
I don't think there would be a problem. It's rubber and plastic elsewhere and older mafs were aluminum. I'll have to check and see if my Pro M has the same size opening, as I could use one of those!!
How much were they elsewhere?
SolacE April 24th, 2005, 12:29 AM Yeah I am curious what it costs from KKM just for the adapter. But I would be very interested....
mcafferty April 24th, 2005, 05:15 AM I will take one if you are going to make them. let me know the cost. thanks. :iconcur:
whatsupadrian April 24th, 2005, 03:22 PM Kurts Kustoms charges about 44.95 + 8(shipping) for the MAF Adapter alone...
The casting that i made is identicle and cost could be close to $10. You can probably use any filter that has a 3.5 inch inlet diameter. The K&N i used is on ebay for about 35 shipped.

itsnotmydaddys April 24th, 2005, 03:27 PM have you noticed a difference with it on. how many hp does it add.
whatsupadrian April 24th, 2005, 04:26 PM I can definately feel the difference, It didn't really make it sound too different, just a little louder. When you rev or smash on the pedal you hear a big gulp of air. I have no idea on an actual HP increase. Should be identical to the KKM except i am using a different filter.
mcafferty April 24th, 2005, 06:11 PM are you going to make some more of them? If so email me and i will take one. thanks, Mac

I am not sure. Its only cheap if i buy several ones. And i don't have the money to invest in them right now.
SolacE April 24th, 2005, 07:49 PM how many would you have to buy in order to get them for $10 or so?
whatsupadrian April 24th, 2005, 09:37 PM i will try to find that out this week. i think like 15-20. not too many. but i am 19 and on a real tight budget.
SolacE April 24th, 2005, 10:50 PM let me know and maybe we can get something together for this...
mcafferty April 25th, 2005, 05:53 AM count me in for one and i dont think you will have problem selling them. I will spread the word and see how many people i can get intresed.
IL-LS April 25th, 2005, 09:23 AM count me in for one and i dont think you will have problem selling them. I will spread the word and see how many people i can get intresed.
Id be in :)
whatsupadrian April 25th, 2005, 02:11 PM Ok heres how i *think* its going to work. They want to massproduce 100 at $9. I need a rough estimate on how many people want them. Then i will distribute them at cost. Then SRT Motorsports, a local speed shop, will hold the rest of the inventory and sell them at a price of their disgression...
I am going to look at other metal shops around here to see if i can get a deal going on a smaller quantity.
IL-LS April 25th, 2005, 04:08 PM keep us posted :)
mcafferty April 25th, 2005, 05:05 PM sounds good let me know what you need from me. thanks...Mac

whatsupadrian April 27th, 2005, 12:36 AM what would be a good price that you all would want to buy the Maf ADAPTERS at? Not including filters or anything.
mcafferty April 27th, 2005, 06:52 AM The questions should be what would you want for it. I will pay a far price for the part and your time let me know what you are thinking.

Kustomz May 3rd, 2005, 11:18 AM YOU COPIED OUR ADAPTER? How sad is that! We design and offer a complete bolt-on induction system for industry overlooked vehicles, use S&B a reputable company that has been manufacturing air filters since 1971 to supply a lifetime filter, then we offer the kit at a very reasonable price, and this is what our efforts yield!
True, everyone has the right to reproduce anything that does not have a patent protection, but when it is produced at a price that offers little to no economic compensation for the engineering, material, and labor, you then embark on a path that will eventually undermine a once great nations economy.
But hey, this is America, land of the free...............

The filter is ok, but this stuff should be cheaper.

Something else everyone needs to consider...without product competition...where would America be? We'd all be driving around in Model T's, talking on a Ma Bell phones and phone lines, using IBM computers...etc..the list goes on and on. Competition is a good thing. Even when the product CAN'T be varied much.
This is exactly why I gutted my air box (see technical articles) and realized a gain similar to any other intake...for a fraction of the cost. Hopefully, I'll have my new exhaust system installed (yet again something I put together) and realize a gain just the same as...if not better...than any other one offered. And again...for a fraction of the cost.
I believe it has been said...by who...I don't know...
"The best ideas are often stolen."
As usual...my $.02.

whatsupadrian May 4th, 2005, 12:34 AM I feel bad for "stealing" even though i payed full price for it. I am sure if there were other companies offering it then the price would be 1/2 what you sell it for, for what it is, nearly $50 is a bit unreasonable in my opinion. My ambitions are to create something a bit unique later on, but thats another story.

Free Enterprise. If you can make a part better and cheaper, people will buy it. As a matter of fact, if you can make it worse and cheaper, people will buy it. Look at the money we give China every day. I always try to keep my money as local as possible. If someone in Knoxville has something, I try there first. You are making it in the US, so it's all good.
I made my own for the Mustang, I was just looking for something a little nicer. I haven't really searched around, although I am sure I could find it elsewhere if I need to.
At least if I ever get money to throw in the LS for the looks department, I have GrayGhost just down the road from me. Can't get any more local than that!!
Thanks for thinking of us.
