power steering unit blew?

I have a 91 sedan deville, 8 cyl. for the past week I have noticed a rumbling noise (single lady here), I looked in my haynes manual and it lead me to believe it was the power steering unit. Sure enough, today while driving I heard the awful sound of crunching metal and crashing noises under the hood, then low and behold the rumbling noise ended, and I no longer had power steering, duh. I made it home, but on the way the battery charge light and the coolant light came on. The belt is not broken but it is off the pulley, which I guess is why the engine was trying to get hot, its not turning the fan. Like I said, made it home. Do you think I blew the power steering unit because of the crunching, or is there a miracle and maybe just the belt was the problem, can a different belt be put on to run the fan, I could live without the power steering for awhile if I had too, no too bad turning. and last but not least, if I have to get a new unit, does anyone know how much approx. they cost, and can I trust my local handy mechanic to do it or do I need to take it to the dealer and probably be broke for the next year or longer. help.

im sorry i cant help solve your problem, i wanted to add a qeustion of my own about the powerstirring unit, i also have a 91 sedan deville and when i turn it makes a weird noise, i cant explain it, i first thought i needed powerstirring fluid, my dad said it might be the pump. i dunno. i havent put fluid in it yet, no insurance so i dont drive very often, lol.do you think i could have the same problem

I don't think we have the same problem...mine had fluid, but started making loud grinding type noises., and then the belt blew as well as the unit. It is in the shop now till who knows when. I was trying to get someone to differenciate between the pump and the gear box. or if it can be bypass with a different belt to put on pulley for fan, etc.

for those of you who had the air compressor problem, with the noise after it shuts off etc, I appreciate all the responses in here, I had the wrong size battery for the car, I now have the right one and I have not had anymore problem or anymore draining of the battery. What a difference, now, just to get the power steering fixed and maybe I will be in shape. :V
