Good bye! I have turned to the dark side....

No, not THAT dark side. I would never downgrade to some crappy Cadillac. Nope, I went with a Benz. 5.6 liter is KICK ASS power! I must admit, its a great ride. But I do miss some things the Mark VIII had such as dimming rear view mirror. But it does have heated seats, all of them! That is one thing I will like!

1991 560 SEL / 17.3 feet long

5.6 liter, 295HP; 336 lb ft-torque @ 6.9 seconds to 60 <-- a lot like the Mark

And one pic for now :)

I used to have a 560 SEC and really liked it. I didnt know much about repairs back then and when the drivers window regulator broke it was like a $1600 repair. This was back in 96 though.
Never had any other issues with that car that I can remember. Was solid and comfy and really quick. Dont think I ever got over 14MPG though.

Anyway, nice find. BTW, if you still have the factory stereo and want to add an aftermarket one please take it to a shop. You have to pretty much wire it from scratch.

Mark VIII is long gone, to the yard compactor it went! Too many problems and I grew tired of it. Almost bought a Gen II LSC all black, but it had clear coat fade bad.

I am tearing out the interior as I type to wire in a new sounds system. The prior owner let her grand kids wire a stereo in. It was BAD. Wires cut everywhere. I could have done a better job blindfolded AND dead.

So far small issues. Cruise control is in-op and is probably related to the stereo. memory seats also not working. Again, could be due to stereo install.

There is something about an engine with a viscus fan that sounds SO cool. Reminds me of my older Marks. This also has two electric. So three fans total.

Can't wait to hear your complaints on that Benz when the instrument cluster fails

I have a friend that works on nothing but Benz and BMW...you're in for a real treat if you thought the Mark was high maintainance

I actually did a lot of research. VDO makes the clusters, not Benz. The W126 platform has few issues but of course, like the Mark, there are some common problems. I looked at BMW, the worst, Jaguar, even worse and other "vintage" luxury lines.

I had a HELL of a time looking for a 91. The last year the w126 platform was produced over a VERY long 12 year run. The car you see above is the same design used for the first year in 1979. When you think about it, it was a VERY modern looking car for its time.

Here is what Ford had going in 79 for its luxury class. Still has fins, round lights, etc. Pretty dated when only compared to the Benz. Dont get me wrong, I miss my Mark V!

So by looking for a 91 I am getting the most "corrected" and "revised" version of the series. Although in 91 this new benz of mine was surly dated in features and looks.

And Chicken. The heart went with it I am sad to say. Including the new OEM front air suspension, etc. Rims too. Sad, I know. But at least now I have a car that will make it to the next beach party!!! :D

Ya, the "big car" look is not for everyone. And yes, they have serious power and tons of torque. They also start off in second gear, so its deceptive if you ever drive one.

Here is a better pic of the same car and the look I will upgrade too shortly.

Well it did not run. The body was rusting bad all of a sudden. The dash cracked open. The rims where pitted bad from a batch of defective brake pads.

There was much wrong. I had not even driven it for about two months. I missed the beach party because I could not get it to run. The ONLY thing of value was the engine, but that had 50k already! Seems like I just put it in! So really it was not worth salvaging.

I didn't realize those Mercs were so fast...
That kind of performance, especially in '91, is really impressive.

Nice looking car. The hood looks long enough to house a Cummins Turbo Diesel.
