as soon as it warms up a bit it goes away but when first turned on and until it warms there is a gas smell comming form both rear pipes. Is this normal, and if not what could cause it?

somewhat normal, Engines run rich when they are cold. If you are really worried about it, throw a scanner on it and check the 02 codes. You may have one out.
