HELP!! Can any members in Massachusetts tell me where I can get my transmission done for less than the price of $2200.00 that AAMCO wants? I live in Watertown and I'm looking for something around the area so I don't put anymore damage on the tranny than I already have.

I can tell you $2200 seems awfully high to me.....

Find a 'take out' or low mile used one. For that kind of dough, you can get yourself a full-blown race tranny good for 600 hp if that is what you are looking for. If you go the rebuilt route, call Geno at LMS and he'll at least point you in the right direction.

i have a trans here in ny in total it has 92325 mile on the car it cam from but i know it was completely redun about 22,000 miles ago. if you want it we can make a deal.

If AAMCO says it's bad the first thing I would do is get a second opinion.

When it seemed the transmisson in my truck was slipping badly I took it to AAMCO. They said, after four days, "It doesn't seem to have an external problem, you need to get it rebuilt for $$$$$$$$".

"No kidding! Not an external problem. Took them four days to figure this out?" I thought. I took it down the street and found out the same day the shaft in the distributer was worn causing the timing to change as it moved about. Fixed that, problem solved.
As bad as MIDAS, I stay out of there too, and PEP BOYS, couldn't do a simple tune up on a simple engine then wanted me to pay to get it redone!

Too bad I don't live in New Jersey. I'd destroy the transmission getting there knowing I could get it done at that price,without a second thought.

I'm going to continue my search around this area for now. However, I'll keep you in mind and maybe we can figure something out. How much do you think it 'd cost for shipping? Think the shipper would drop at a residential address?

I'd love to have it done for $1650, but I think it'd be WAAAY over my budget with towing.

maybe I'd be better off having it towed there. Thanks again. I'm going to have to buckle down and grab ALOT of overtime to pay for this before it gets any worse. :eek:

I had my transmission rebuilt for about $1600, but they had problems geting the valve body flush with the case. After 3 or 4 attempts, they ended up taking a transmission from another Mark VIII that someone gave to them to cover the cost of their rebuild (kinda pointless huh). Anyway, it has worked better than the origional. Just to give you an idea of cost vs location, I had this work done in Atlanta, GA.

My mistake. I messed up my replies. That question was actually to Eric1 in Brooklyn. I'll give it a couple of more weeks and then I may just dump the car. Even with 36 hours of Over time there's not a lot left after taxes to get it fixed right now. I've had trannys replaced at one point or another in most of the cars I've had 2 '76 Cougars,a 75 cougar a 65 mustang,a 79 cougar an 87 ramcharger (and to have my 4WD replaced only cost me 850) to an '84 jaguar and and few in between. I've never paid more than $900. I guess I shouldn't have believed the guy I bought it from when he said it only needed to have the Emergency brake cable replaced,which he had in the trunk. Things are too tight now to pay some of these prices I've been quoted. So far the best deal was from you guys at LMS, 'cept I don't live close enough to have it done there. Thanks anyway guys, maybe I can find another soon and stay here.

man, i wish i was living in thae area you guys are at. i wouldnt have to work at a dealership.the labor rate must be through the roof.as smart as some of you guys are ,ford makes a manual that takes you step buy step over the whole transmission. 800$ in parts and never look back.im being serious. this trans is a peice of cake.no special tools that couldnt be made.the only thing you need to remember is no red rags and be as clean a a doctor would.

Besides the book,don't you need a lift of some kind to get it far enough off the ground to remove it? I don't know, but it looks a little big to slide out from under the car to work on it. If I could find the book and had the right tools and equipment, I'd try and do it myself. I'd rather pay for the book and parts than pay someone else the kind of money I've been quoted around here AND not get rid of the car, considering I've only had about it for about 2 weeks. Flat rate is posted in the places I've been at between $75 and $95 an hour around here. Depending on where you go.

Go to the junkyard! Right now in Chicago there are two Mark VIIIs both smashed in the front. ONe has 67,000 the other 135,000 miles. It is located at You pull it in Chicago. The exact location is North ave east of Cicero ave. Bring your tools.

Finally!! I found somebody in the area that's going to replace my tranny with a good used one for $650. He's going to find one for me and replace it after I drop the car off and get the body work finished on the 18th.

I'm stuck with mine too. It's getting fixed. So, I'm gonna scap the nitrous idea since this new tranny costs so friggin much and just get my wheels and gears installed.

Well this problem is solved. Cars tranny finally gave up the ghost. Had to get it towed to the local transmission place. No 4th gear and convertor crapped out. On the good side, I was told it'll cost at most $1500 including, tow ,labor and parts. Which still leaves me with some from the $2400 the insurance gave me to put aside towards getting the front end damage repaired. Atleast now I'll get some more exercise hoofing it until Friday anyway.

So, if anyone is having TRACTION ASSIST problems with their Mark VIII, dont take it to Geno...he obviously doesnt know how they work! :N

Seriously though...Here is my Black 94, with a full JMOD-spec tranny, and my buddy Todd's 97 LSC that I also did a JMOD to. Listen carefully...they both chirp at the exact same time(BTW, the more HP you make, the less firm the shift with a JMOD)

I am telling you guys...if you go to AAMCO, you will throw away $2200.
send me the money, I'll fly out the Mass, and bring a better tranny AND converter, and install it, and have some spending money left over.

seriously...take a roadtrip to jersey...get it done. or, if that is not an option, go to greenleaf.com, and buy a "take out" 98+ tranny with low miles, that will require very little modification to make it fit/work, and end up with a better tranny than aamco can build, for less money.
