mark82nv May 17th, 2010, 03:47 PM i bought a set of under drive pulleys.
want to install them
what the hell is that thing in front of the camshaft pulley and can it be removed to install the other pulley?
BAD97LSC May 17th, 2010, 03:53 PM there are no camshaft pulleys. if you dont know the difference between the cams and the crank you might not want to try to install underdrives yourself!!
in front of the CRANK pulley is a secondary smog pump valve, yes it can be removed, and yes you will HAVE to remove it to get the crank pulley off. have fun!!
DieselDan May 17th, 2010, 05:14 PM Looks like we might have another camel situation about to happen :D
mark82nv May 17th, 2010, 05:44 PM cam shaft i cant believe i said that , i am very frustrated and i did know it was a crank pulley i must have cam shaft on my mind! sorry about that . thanks for the response and i will probably break a few things to get that stupid thing off there , but hey we got to break a few things to make our (mark) dont we> :)
BAD97LSC May 17th, 2010, 05:51 PM no, not really, some of you do though lol!
blacklsc1 May 17th, 2010, 07:14 PM i just put underdrives on my 98, i took off the three nuts that secure it to the frt cover, and carefully bent it up. Made enough room to get the pulley's on with no prob. then bent it back down. I dident think it was worth trying to get the air tubes off and end up breaking them. And just for your fyi i do feel a difference with the pulleys. obviously mid and top pull.
danny_holtermann May 17th, 2010, 09:04 PM btw, you need a special pulley to take the crank pulley off
Sapperfire May 17th, 2010, 09:46 PM Yeah it's called a " crank pulley puller"...lol
02LS8Lincoln May 17th, 2010, 09:54 PM not a hammer a puller!!!! lol
BAD97LSC May 17th, 2010, 10:17 PM i have march underdrives on my 97, they make a huge difference, the crank spins way faster, my car climbs in rpm's super fast.
Sapperfire May 17th, 2010, 11:48 PM Ok excuse the retardedness in me right now, but if your car climbs in rpms faster, meaning it's going into it's next rear in a shorter period of time, that also means that it's not in it's power band very long...which would reduce acceleration due to loss in torque
BAD97LSC May 17th, 2010, 11:57 PM i'll excuse your retardedness. whatever you just typed, means nothing if i cant take you for a ride. my motor spins faster, the roatating assembly will spin faster with underdrives. spinning faster means it accelerates faster, plus the gears and posi make it all come together.
mark82nv May 18th, 2010, 12:41 AM im having a hell of a time with this stupid secondary smog crap got it loose got plate loose all hoses off and even got the line broke underneath it but i cant seem to get the line off the module itself , i will try gently bending it out of the way in the morning , this is not supposed to be this hard to do! and yes i have a pulley puller thing a ma bobber to hopefully take off the pulley .

Want to borrow my hammer? :D
hy35f2t May 18th, 2010, 06:59 AM I have a 93.So do i just order underdrive pulleys for a 96 4.6 32valve cobra?
evf4720 May 18th, 2010, 07:26 AM anybody have charging issues with underdrive pullys? i never got them because i didnt think the gain would be worth wasting a few alternators.

I cut them off in front of the manifold with a pipe cutter spaced every thing accordingly with the bracket in front of the pulley and spliced it back together with hi-temp hose

I too would like to know this...
evf4720 May 18th, 2010, 09:18 AM I too would like to know this...
i spose i wouldnt mind knowing either

Any recommendations for getting that piece of :q:q:q:q off the car?
I gave up after running out of all the cuss words I knew and all the skin off one hands worth of knuckles.
That piece of crap ranks right up there with getting the goddam steering wheels off my two columns, which is the other part of the car I can't get the :q:q:q:q apart.
Lower strut bolts, piece of cake.
Tiny bolts and pressed on parts, im:q:q:q:qingpossible.

Under drive pulleys reduce the drag on the motor by slowing down how fast the rest of the pulleys spin.
less drag = more HP.

The crank pulley?
Kstills May 18th, 2010, 09:51 AM The crank pulley?
No, that crappy little bowl that sits in front of the pulley.
I swear to God, everything on this car I think should be hard to do is a piece of cake, and all the easy looking stuff kicks my ass.
I might be a little frustrated atm....
mark82nv May 18th, 2010, 10:06 AM sounds good im cutting this stupid thing off and repairing it with fuel line hose. then im going to have some skin graphed off my as s and repair my knuckles!
Sapperfire May 18th, 2010, 03:40 PM You should probably let the skin on your knuckles calise over since they drag the ground anyway
ripped camel May 18th, 2010, 05:35 PM Oh crap dude...stay away from any hammers. I remember this is how the downward spiral started for me.....
BAD97LSC May 18th, 2010, 05:39 PM i dont have to worry about the smog stuff, mine is all gone!! the only thing in front of my pulleys, is the electric fan, :q:q:q:q emmisions!
blacklsc1 May 18th, 2010, 05:50 PM anybody have charging issues with underdrive pullys? i never got them because i didnt think the gain would be worth wasting a few alternators.
when i put the underdrives on i also upgraded the alternator to 200amp version. i havenet had any issues yet(i dont drive it much due to the company car) however at idle the interior lights do dim, until you get above 800-1200 rpm.
BAD97LSC May 18th, 2010, 07:09 PM i have no issues with my stock alt what so ever, i did however install the pulley that was supplied from march with the set, so i have the crank, water pump and alt pulleys all on and dont have dim lights or any charging issues.
Stangman May 18th, 2010, 07:45 PM So are Gen 2 pullies and Gen 1 pullies the same?

Yeah but what brand do you have?
The only ones that are you should use on our cars are non-piggyback pulleys. The only ones I know of for our cars are the March Deluxe 1175 and the Steeda Underdrive Pulleys...all others are piggyback (at least that I'm aware of).
Also as mentioned in other forums (this is what I read so I don't know the accuracy) our engine are prone to damage to the oil pump gear. Supposedly it is hyper-sensitive to vibrations and can pop the engine. The Steeda people say is lighter than the stock pulley and gives more vibrations than the stock one, the March is heavier but is less vibrations than stock.
This is what they asserted in the other forum I was reading last night (SVTP forums and also Mach 1 registry). Make sure if you do take the plunge you do immense research before you purchase anything.
BAD97LSC May 18th, 2010, 09:25 PM yes gen 1 pulleys and gen 2 are the same.
philly0420 May 18th, 2010, 09:52 PM I have low voltage with my underdrives, but I have a stereo and aftermarket hid kit. Its usually if it sits idling for a while. The meter drops sometimes to 10.0, but no lights dim. I usually just give it a little gas and it goes right back to 13 or 14. I also have an optima battery, 2 12 inch subs, 2 500 watt amps, and 2 1.0 farad caps.

What type/brand of pulleys?
BAD97LSC May 18th, 2010, 10:22 PM i have aftermarket hid's also, and i may have a problem with the stereo once its all installed, that monster kicker might suck some juice!!
philly0420 May 18th, 2010, 10:22 PM March deluxe. It has to idle for a while and usually the hids have two be on as well, but not always. I have the crank, water pump and alt. I never noticed any problem on my 04 blown mach 1 mustang with the same pullies. But I rarely ever drive it.
cobra mk8 May 18th, 2010, 11:24 PM Will you put a red flag on your antenna so I know never to buy that car… .
Stangman May 19th, 2010, 07:12 AM yes gen 1 pulleys and gen 2 are the same.
Any brand work? for a 96-98 Cobra I assume?
(everything else I've bought seems to be for a cobra of that year)
philly0420 May 19th, 2010, 07:39 AM I'm never selling my car anyway. I also dont see it as a problem.
ripped camel May 19th, 2010, 08:57 AM Any brand work? for a 96-98 Cobra I assume?

Yes 96-98 cobra....
philly0420 May 19th, 2010, 09:22 AM I left out of my other post that fthe voltmeter I'm refering to is on the head unit for the capacitors. The point I was trying to make was that underdrives to affect charging a little. I know my alternator spins pretty slow. I always think faster than I type.
mark82nv May 19th, 2010, 05:34 PM ok i finally got the crank pulley off i had to just about take off the whole front end of the car but its there now , so since i got that all torn apart i ripped out the air box silencer, and im adding my tranny cooler while im at it too. what is a piggy back set? the set i bought seems to be right and the polished billet aluminum pulleys are looking very heavy duty, the alt pulley was the same size as my other one . a three hour job is now on its third day (but im working too so i cant get to it like i wanted to). i am going to start a progress thread because im starting my complete gutting to install the sound dampener for my stereo system .
BAD97LSC May 19th, 2010, 06:03 PM dont assume the alt pulley is the same as stock, my march pulley looked identicle in every way to the stock, till i threw calipers on the groove where the belt rides, it was only 8 thousandths smaller, but thats still smaller!
mark82nv May 22nd, 2010, 12:47 AM if the alt pulley is different it cant be by very much at all , well i got the underdrive pulleys all installed, deleted the airbox silencer, put a new belt on, and added a double external tranny cooler. took it out for a drive and i can tell a difference! there is more pull in the mids for sure.
looks great too! next move is to start the gutting for the stereo install!
