JasonFC March 12th, 2010, 07:40 PM Hey there, I plan on picking up a Mark VIII in the next few weeks, and I've been doing my homework on them, so I wont have too many questions to bother you with (Jmod, headights, neon, etc). But I do have one very large question I would like to have answered...
Will 4.10s, exhaust, 3200 stall, Jmod, intake, and tune net a Mark VIII mid 13s? If not, what will?
sbcaprice305 March 12th, 2010, 08:19 PM i'd say high 13's but i'm no expert. what year? mileage?
JasonFC March 12th, 2010, 08:36 PM I havent found one yet, im getting a few finances in order from a failed adventure trying to live in Tennessee.. lol. I owe my old room mate $1000. So once I get that straightened out Ill be picking one up. It will be a '98, and no more than 90kmi on it.

With a 3200 stall, 373s, and a tune that was designed to take advantage of the 97 octane fuel that my water/meth system generates, I have ran a 13.99 and that was with the car dynoing 257 HP on the axle.
I would personally expect low 14s from the setup you describe.
LaserSVT March 12th, 2010, 08:49 PM A first gen may see mid 13's with that but a second gen would be high 13's. You will need tires too.

What else need be done for mid to low 13s? Tires included to that list. I havent seen much as far as bolt on power mods, I doubt I'll ever buy headers, and nitrous scares me a bit.. but I would imagine a 100 dry shot would be totally safe?
EDIT: With the gears and stall would I be capable of taking advantage of a 96-98 Cobra intake? How much would that help me in my goal to a mid to low 13?
XLRVIII March 12th, 2010, 09:19 PM i'd say high 13's but i'm no expert. what year? mileage?
that a pretty fair estimate IMHO
its about .6 -.9 tenths (guestimating of course) worth of mods.
depending on the baseline et and year model it could be from 13.80-14.20
LaserSVT March 12th, 2010, 09:21 PM When you said exhaust I assumed headers too. They are only worth 9-15 hp but every little bit helps. A Cobra plenum is very nice and if its on a first gen it will make future TPS/IAC/TB work easier too. The Cobra intake is only good for 5 hp though. More of a beautification mod but 5 hp is 5 hp. :D
XLRVIII March 12th, 2010, 09:22 PM 14.15@100.99 w/ 373s, 2.5 exhaust, tune, stock air box, paper filter on a 95 model
14.79@94.69 (01-31-09) tune only stone stock turd 98 LSC

for 5-600 bucks i'll pass on the 5hp and looks.
XLRVIII March 12th, 2010, 09:56 PM ahhh the age old "peak power" number.
while its probably 5-8 hp PEAK what you dont realize it has more power across the rpm range and doesnt fall off as fast in the higher rpms.
I'll take "5"..hell yea and if i had the cash i'd put a cobra intake on my car..
02LSE96LSC91SE84TC March 12th, 2010, 09:59 PM High 13 potential sure. Consistently running it, probably not.
Infarc March 12th, 2010, 10:15 PM I'll stick with my low 14s estimate. It would be really interesting to have you build the car up and run it and see who is the closest. Sort of like Passtime!
cadillackman March 12th, 2010, 10:38 PM You'd be consistantly faster with those mods on a first gen as stated above. A Cobra Intake on a first gen is pointless unless you're going SC.

I'd like to put a first gen intake on my 98, if that's the only reason it's sooooo much slower. Surely someone's done it.
LaserSVT March 12th, 2010, 11:57 PM Wut? The second gen is slower due to added weight and less agressive initial timing on tip in. They are only a fraction of a second slower, not some huge difference. But as far as I had read besides peoples biased opinions it seems the first and second gen intakes were the same from a performance standpoint but the second gen winning when it comes to maintenance.
Am I wrong here?
Sapperfire March 13th, 2010, 12:03 AM Gen1 intakes are better, i told ya so, i told ya so...but your probably getting a cobra soon so whatda you care...

cadillackman March 13th, 2010, 03:58 AM All I know is that my 95 will beat the snot out of this 98 in perfect running order. And my old 93 (stock as hell) will beat the snot out of the 95. So it seems like this 2nd gen is doubly slow. I know another guy with a 98 & we ran neck to neck on the interstate from a 30 mph roll, so I don't necessarily think the 98 is uber slow when compared to it's peers. I'm not too savy on the timing but even if so, I don't think a tune would gain a whole helluva lot when stacked up to a first gen.
Sapperfire March 13th, 2010, 04:01 AM how bout a 98 with 3/73 vs a stock 93?
gotta get my studder gone so i can run Bill..
CobraStar_LS8 March 13th, 2010, 12:56 PM 98 w/ 4.30s sounds alot better

He wants to know if his car would outrun mine
93 stock vs 98 w/ tune, gears, track lok, exhaust.

I see you have braided brake lines.
I haven't been able to find them anywhere, where did you pick yours up?
cadillackman March 13th, 2010, 02:33 PM I think the trac-lock & gears would net you a solid win. Now if he can actually hook up without a trac-lock, i'd say it'd be close to even until mid 2nd gear. If you picked up a nice converter he'd be owned every time:) I don't know enough about the gains of a tune on a 2nd. gen. to even guess on that part. I do think the 2nd gen's fizzle out a little earlier in the rpm band though. Being that mine is stock.

eBay. I searched for Thunderbird braided brake lines and found a place that carries them and in the ad says you can specify Mark VIII. They said they were a little different but not sure how. Took 2 weeks and they were about $150 shipped. I really like them though. Great quality and the pedal was much less spongy. I did the blue fluid and Cobra calipers up front at the same time but I believe it was the lines that made the pedal feel better.

Sweet, thanks.
My lines are rusting to the back, so this is another job I'll be doing this summer. :)
