I just got 10 194 LED bulbs for mine. I'll get them installed tomorrow. I just don't know whether to put them in the '96 or the '97. I plan to do both eventually. I've already got LED turn signals on my '96 and plan to replace all the incandescent bulbs on both my Marks. I love LED's!!

I got a 10 pack on Ebay for about $6 with free shipping.

i will hold on to them for you. It is dirty as hell thats what happens when its your dd in the middle of winter. Plan on changing out the interior before to long. Thats the same ones i got off ebay. I had to mess with the leads on some of them to get them to work.

Is it just 194 lamps that are used throughout the interior? Trying to get a shopping list. Might pick this up tonight and put the LEDs in.

I have had mine in for a long time now, their great. You can eGay them for 9.99 free shiping for 20pc 194 bulbs. I also replaced the turn sigals and reverse lights while i was at it on mine. The front ones look alot better now becuz you dont have that ugly yellow halogen when you turn its all white.;)

The door lights are 212 42mm, which neither car above completed. Pick up a pair of 212's and finish the deal FTW

The bulbs are all 194's, except the two door lights which are 212's 42mm. I'm not sure about reverse lights as I didn't change those. Nor did I do the puddle lamps but I'd like to eventually.

194's: You'll need 2 for the rear reading lights, 2 for the map lights in front, 2 for the floor wells, 1 for the glove box, 1 for the trunk, 1 for the license plate.

212's: 2 for the door lights.

The cheap 4 LED bulbs on Feebay mentioned above are too dim for my taste. I installed them, then I ordered another set of 7 Bulb LEDs to replace the 4-bulbs. The 7-bulbs look TONS brighter and cleaner.

Thats the deal with buying LED replacements - there can be one LED on it or 36, they all fit in the same socket. So besides price, the differences when shopping for LED's are light output (brightness) and color.

I used 194's in the doors. Had to take the panel off to remove the old bulb but they work.

The 212s for the doors are Gen 2. Perhaps Gen 1 uses a different door bulb?

This may be a stupid question but when you unlock the car do they gradually get brighter like the factory ones? or do they just turn on?

kylecm85
June 13th, 2010, 08:59 PM
The ones i have just come straight on with no delay in brightness.

that sucks, I really wanted to do the LED's but I love how the lights gradually come on.

I only have LEDs for the floor and they gradually turn off with the opera lighting.

For a Gen 1, here's the shopping list I've come up with. Let me know if I screwed any up or missed anything...

Exterior: 2x 3157 Amber front signal, 4x 3157 white (rear signal, reverse,) 10x 194 (front marker, tails.)

Interior: 11x 194 Rear maps, front maps, front floor pans, glove box, trunk, license plate.

Aftermarket leds aren't overly reliable, nor cheap...

ebay but no idea who from. Was a year ago when I got em. They were cheap as hell to. They are single LED with the end of the cover being concave.

I don't remember my regular lights having a delay in brightness. So a question I have is do gen 1 and gen 2 have different lighting modules. I might have just never paid any attention to this until you all brought it up.

Gen 1 does not have opera lighting.

Reliable? Not really. I've already had to replace several of the ones I installed about 3 months ago. Cheap? Yeppers. I got a bag of 10 #194's on Ebay for about $6 bucks including shipping. I checked the price of #194's at my local AutoZone recently...$16 dollars for TWO bulbs. Good grief!!! I'll get mine from fleabay any day of the week.

OK that's what i thought. So then the leds in the second gen might work with the opera lighting.

3 months for some of the bag of $6 ones? Well, if you feel like changing bulbs that often then by all means go for it...

I have a pair of 800 milliwatt SMD LED 194s on the way to try out.. There are so many designs of these damn things it's hard to decide which would be best for which application. I'll keep a spare or two in the ashtray if I need them, 94 cents a bulb isn't a big deal...

As for feeling like changing bulbs... it takes literally less than 10 seconds to do just about any interior bulb, so WGAF?

Good point there Medium, but personally I'd want something a bit more reliable for my money :)

Yes. They do. They work on my '97 LSC.

I bought a ton of these things on fleabay. I put them in both my Marks and both my Explorers. Also put some in my mom's '08 Mustang convertible and her '97 Cougar 30th Anniversary Edition. So far no probs with either of them. And only had to replace one trunk strip bulb, dome light bulb, and driver's side floor bulb in my '96. As far as the '97 LSC, no problems. No problems with either of the '94 Explorers either. I actually have blue LED's in the '97. They are pretty:). The rest have white LED's.

I want LED's but If they're not dimmable, I'm not interested.

jrherald420
June 18th, 2010, 01:22 PM
The dimming isnt done by the LED. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, the dimming action is caused by the electricty being restircted by a variable resistor not the LED.

I believe the 2nd gen cars use PWM (pulsed width modulation) for the dimming of the lights...

jrherald420
June 18th, 2010, 09:07 PM
Could be, i was thinking they would go the cheaper route than going PWM.

I have blue glass halogens on my floor, doors, over head and back reading lights, the 2 front reading lights are sonic blue led
the carpet now matches the color of my dash lights and the reading lights match my cd players lighting
I hve no changed the glove box or trunk lights yet, that's next

since my car is a blue/blue, it thought Id take it a bit further and make it a blue/blue/blue/blue LOL

I've been thinking about chroming the housing for the door lights...I think I'm gonna do that like...right now
