This is the official thread for the Stack Mark Murder Mark.... or S&M for short :D

So I pulled into the shop on better terms now getting over the shock/awe/pissed/terrible experience of his stuff getting jacked..

First on the list is the fuel filler door shave and relocation.

Good thinking on the light swinging out KK. UP would be ideal probably, with a spring comparable to what pulls a door handle back down if you know what I mean, except pulling up instead. So it's not hanging in the breeze all vulnerable and stuff on a windy day with a plastic housing ya know?..
Ray hooked his light up to the fuel door release.

I owe it to the Kid to take all of this on...

There were some ambitious plans to throw my parts mountain at this car all at once but this summer just involved one set back after another...

I'm backing this financially, and when I can physically, while Kid does the build.

This car has been in the works for a LONG time for me... a few of you know the story and only a couple know everything

Its going to be Epic when its done and this is just a small first stage...

Brandon and I talk on a daily basis and once again I just want to thank him publicly for everything he has done and will do for the car :)

Thanks Kid!

Well, the batmobile was Lincoln based.

So, whose gonna be Batman and whose gonna be Robin? :D

The Futura worked perfectly as a Batmobile, as it had many "bat" features built into the design already, such as the long fins and bubble canopies. According to Barris, he further enhanced the theme by converting the nose into an integrated bat mask, a first for the car. He also opened the wheel wells, and modified the Futura's fins into subtle bat wings by extending their leading edges into the doors and scalloping the trailing edges. Once bodywork was complete, the car was painted gloss black with red trim to accentuate the various lines of he car. Three replicas were eventually built by Barris' shop, though only one appeared on the show itself.

The car featured an impressive array of bat-gadgets. In addition to the "atomic turbine engine" (the car was actually powered by a blueprinted Ford V8), the car had a nose-mounted chain slicer, lasers, rockets, an on-board telephone, radar, dash monitor, on-board computer, and police beacon. If needed, the Batmobile is capable of a quick 180° "bat-turn" thanks to two rear-mounted 10' parachutes, and the it is equipped with a smoke emitter and a nail spreader to discourage pursuit. Some changes were made during the run of the series, including different license plates, a change in steering wheel, and the addition of extra gadgets such as the rear-facing camera and battering ram.

So I didn't accomplish as much as I wanted this weekend... but at least I did something!

That being said I have learned a few things, one Lincoln used some really thin, really poorly weldable metal on these cars, and two sheet metal work is not like riding a bike... if you stop you lose what little skills you may have had quickly :D

So I am waiting on the hinge and latch for the tail light so that is on hold... and I am not quite ready to tackle the shaved door handles, need to gather a few more parts for that as well.

So what did I decide to do... Cut a big hole in the side of the car :D

Get rid of the useless stuff...

Well the flat metal doesn't fit at all... wtf :D No big just need to finesse it a bit!

Contour Gauge
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8499.jpg

Precise rolling tool :D

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8503.jpg

So you would think you are ready to put the panel in right... well not quite, the sides of our cars are very flat... but very and completley are two different things!
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8496.jpg

So you use the English wheel to give the panel a little dimension...
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8489.jpg

Wheel bling!

Pretty damn close!

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8507.jpg

Weld it in and grind smooth/

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8508.jpg

I had a horrible time welding the panel in... the Mark is ~20 gauge, maybe even a little thinner... my welder was loaded with .030 wire, way too thick... .025 would be much better...

So I had to fix a spot where I burned through severely...

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8509.jpg
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr280/kustomizingkid/Stacks%20Mark%20VIII/DSC_8510.jpg

Due to my poor welding I had fits finishing it out... I was able to get it close... but nowhere near what I would like to see... sadly this panel will need a lot more filler than I would like. I'm going to do the otherside a bit different...

I am no body man but I just want to ask about your method. What if you possibly didnt cut out the channel, but maybe ground the outside of the channel and weld your peice to that? Just was thinking that it might keep the door from warping from taking such a long peice out of it. I am sure there is a method to your madness, but I was just curious.

I was thinking you'd have done this on the quarter, cut/grind your filler panel down to size so it sits in enough inside the radius of the groove, tack in the gap a bit btwn filler and edge of groove, then use kitty hair or a bit of mud, light block sand. Then run filler primer over the side of the car using more where your fab work is and block that out to finish up. With like, a 12" or 18" block.

Definately different methods though! My idea might not be the best.

Thing is it's flexible, when it's laid out it's not the same shape as it is on the door..
And the shape isn't going to be the same either, the factory molding protrudes in center to assist in doors running into it, which he doesn't want in the filler piece.. he wants it more smooth

And he's working with a curve in every direction, the piece he needs to make for a filler piece has a curve up/down, side/side. Gonna take some patience for sure.

You are going to have to do it in stages section it up, after that it will take a lot of filler, which is better then warping the whole door.

The old skool guys would have used led.

Its going to be a time eater for sure.

What if he makes one strip full length, forms the radius, then slices it every inch or so from top edge to center- for the whole length. Then do the same on the bottom half, except have the slices run in the middles of the top slices, then it would be flexible to fit the [forward to rear] curve of the door... and the offset slices should prevent it from buckling, and be easier to smooth out with mud.. right?

Just a thought after you said that

There are a couple big problems with trying to do this with one big piece, getting the shape is just one.

The LSC trim goes all the way threw the door seam, its a main part of the door stucture.
Cutting that would be a major mistake, unless you just work in that area.
Even then trying to get the door right in that area is going to be a major PITA.

The door is very weak all around the LSC trim, it bends and just gives too much.
I think if Brandon cut it out they way the rear was sectioned would make the door a scrap pile test door in a hurry.

There in no doubt he has ran this threw his head a hundred times already.

Right, agreed completely,..

What I mean, is not to cut any of the door out at all, and do what I mentioned with his fabbed filler metal.. If you keep this in mind and re-read my last post, what do you think about it?

I never thought he would cut any of the car to perform this in the first place, really. Not that it's necessarily ''wrong''..

I just mean the outside shape of the filler panel, you would have to use the english wheel to round it out a bit, it would take some time but it would just keep you from removing that channel that is already in the door, most likely for strength in the first place.

I would notice in a heartbeat, whether being familiar with a mark or not, I'd be like "what did the factory do for side molding if you have it looking like this??" So yeah, you're prob right, most people prob just not even notice.

The quarter shave took me ~12 hours...

Here is the problem with the door...

1: The inner structure where the door meets the quarter panel is intended for the moulding... if I don't fix that there is no way to make the door gap look right without an ass load of filler... What is going to to have to happen is I will have to cut out part of the inner structure and make a new one...

2: The bottom line of the moulding channel has a pipe running behind it... no access behind it, so after welding I can't do anything if it comes out warped or messed up...

3: It's a huge flat panel... it going to warp after I weld on it, no way around that... just going to have to fix it the best I can after welding...

If I were to make a filler and weld it above the channel if it came out warped or too low or anything I'm stuck... only thing left to do is start pilling on the filler until it looks good...

After all the wires are pulled through the door the next step is to mount the solenoid. Just had to shave away a little foam to make room for it.

I cut off the :q:q:q:qty stock battery clamps for some better ones and I attached a new power to the positive side for the door handles.

Mount the receiver and finish up the last few wires and its all done!

I vacuumed out the car as it was getting pretty dirty from all the work...

kustomizingkid, Just wondering is it worth(meaning all the trouble for installing) switching over to the door kit if your door handle is broken or is it just easier to replace the door handle and be done with it? My brother's Mark VIII handle is been a pain to find and seems like it will cost near $200 so thinking of this as a alternative.

Get a used door handle, any color.
Paint to match.
Install.

Far easier then what he is doing.

Well guys...

I'll try not to spoil it for Brandon but some headway was made this weekend!

I got the poppers up to him when they came in on friday and he has been working like a MAD MAN all weekend.

I'll let him post pics and such but its all coming to fruition!

That car is gonna be slick. I have thought the doors would be good on several cars. And I have wanted to do lambo doors on the red mark forever. Sorry I know I just raised hell. But the car sits so low and the doors are so long. It would have to be done right and not some cheap :q:q:q:q. I've seen most of the universal kits. I'm sorry already I said it.:(
