My thoughts exactly. VERY RARE Bird. I've owned 5 T-Birds all together & none of them could compare. I'd jump on that for my Mark any day.

Very clean car but with such low miles you really cann't even drive it. At this point 20 yo the whole value in the car would be the mileage. You go enjoying it and it will lose that. Then its just another pos.

If you get it, you have to keep it in a garage for 20 years and then it's Barrett-Jackson all the way.

I like the 35th and thats a very nice car... but as far as actually driving it, it's gotta be a 5spd like mine.

January 22nd, 2010, 06:57 PM
Looking at that interior I miss my supercoupes!! I may still buy another one someday if I trip across one that hasn't been through the ringer. Yes, those 35th anny cars were f'g ugly.

Yeah, you could probably buy at least 3 or 4 NICE marks for what that is worth. With those miles I wouldn't be surprised if either an auto museum or ford would buy it for more like 50k.

If it wasn't for supercoupes introducing me to fords, I would never have looked at the mark as a serious candidate for something I may drive. Alot of the old mark guys (when this board was new and these cars weren't so old) got into marks via the supercoupe world. Now, I bet hardly any members here even know what that car is.

In fact, the only reason I have a mark is to have a supercharged 8 instead of the 6, and a 6 speed instead of a 5. It will be equivalent to the new supercoupe without the reliability problems. That's been my intention all along, and I'm barely finally about to get started on actually doing it.

Yeah. I said supercoupe, not thunderbird. Compared to the old, definately. This is 2010 you know, an 18 year old kid was born in 1992, How many cars did you pay attention to from around your birth year, let alone the ones that were more of a rarity.

How many supercoupes do you see in a year? Without going to a SC meet, I bet none.

so i opted for a tbird, knowing about supercoupes...just didnt like the 3.8L platform they are timebombs went with the 4.6L

Man, that is one awesome car. I always lived the Supercoupes. Never owned one though. I did have a 1993 'Bird with the 302 HO engine. Only 200hp but it was pretty fast. Also had 1990 SC 16" wheels on it. I couldn't trade my Mark for that Bird though. I just can't see a SC without a 5-speed. The slushbox just doesn't do it justice.

I used to have a 1988 and a 1987 T-Bird Trubo Coupe. Both with 5-speeds. I had the chance to buy an '87 TC last year for $2500 bucks. It only had 67K miles on it. But it was a slushbox. I test drove it and it just didn't feel right. So I just couldn't bring myself to get it. But anyway, the 35th Anniversary Bird has always been one of my favorites.

I see 4 every time I drive over to my best friends place- ones behind his barn. He early traded his truck for one about 3 years ago, but ended up getting a 91 sport instead.

I also know what an LTDII is, capri, TC, and merkur XT-i ;)

ad if you want to get technical, they were fox-based until 2004!

auto TC's came with only 150hp since the auto couldnt take the power.

Zephyr, Capri, Granada, Conti, Mark VII... ;) And yes I had to look it up, knew I was forgetting something, turns out it was the Granada.

The 2ng gen Granada? Because the 1st gen Granada was on the old Falcon/Comet/Mustang chassis that had been around since 1960. I once used a 1978 Granada front suspension to convert my '67 Fairlane to front disc brakes. And the original Capri was actually a British import. The Fox Capri didn't appear until '79 with the "new" Fox Mustang.

ad if you want to get technical, they were fox-based until 2004!

Even in 2004, the Mustang was still a Fox, so to speak. The suspension and platform was still the same. The only major difference was the conversion to 5-lug hubs/brakes and some stiffening.

auto TC's came with only 150hp since the auto couldnt take the power.

Yeah. I know. Both my '87 and '88 had the 190hp engine and 5-speed. The slushbox TC's also had single exhaust while the manual models had dual. Both of my TC's had thrush glaspack mufflers, gutted converters, open element air filters, and adjustable boost controllers. They were blisteringly fast. I'm betting they had well over 200hp with those subtle mods. I miss 'em.

Man, both of mine were plain awesomeness! Unfortunately, I wrecked my first one. It was a cherry '88. Black with black/grey cloth interior. Bought it in '95 with 60K on it. Drove the pi$$ out of it. It handled like a race car and was superfast. At least for a four banger pulling a 2 ton car:) . And it got 25+mpg on the highway to boot. Believe it or not, I got 30mpg driving to Myrtle Beach a couple of times. I wrecked it in '98 and got a grey '87 with 165K after that and ened up putting the engine, tranny, interior, and suspension from my '88 into it before I sold it. I thought I was upgrading when I got my '93 T-Bird V-8 Sport. I loved the looks and the digital gauges. But it was a rattletrap. Everything inside rattled and squeaked all the time. It drove me nuts. The TC's were solid, quiet, and rattle free the whole time I had them. When I got rid of the '93 Bird and got my 70K mile '96 Mark VIII back in 2000, it was like a different world. No rattles. No squeaks. And faaaaast. I'm a happy camper. It's hard to believe the two cars were based on the same platform, for the most part.

I dunno what that whole 'XR...' means - probably just a fancy jumble of letters. In the Euro market we had various 'XR' models which were performance orientated regular Fords. (Ford Fiesta XR2 and XR2i, Ford Escort XR3 and XR3i and Ford Sierra XR4i and XR4x4 (although those had 2.8 Cologne V6 engines) Then we had even higher performance models with 'RS' (Rallye Sport?) in the jumble.

I've spent countless hours under various Ford Sierra's when i was a kid, but don't remember much about the subframes - I was usually left holding an exhaust or whatever while my dad disappeared to get something, only to forget and leave me there!!!
