Scorpio1118_2000 January 18th, 2010, 07:57 PM I'm never going to give them any of my money ever again, I had to do a heli-coil and they gave me the wrong kit for $30 and they didn't have any body there to tell me how to use it. Then stupid me tries to use it and it falls down the hole and I had to use 3M tape to get it out, then I went to autozone of all places and got the help I needed and the right tool, go figure. I hate them too but when it comes to my baby go where I need to get the job done.
htrdlincoln98 January 18th, 2010, 08:11 PM Yeah they suck if your looking for advise. I'd careful doing jobs that Advance or autozone or pep.. had to tell me how its done. At least it worked out for you.
Calabrio January 18th, 2010, 08:20 PM Ask here before you ask AutoAdvancePepZone...
I worked at one of them in high school, still didn't know crap- and I was probably the second most knowledgable guy there.
"Tie Rod... so that's in the- engine page"
No, steering and suspension.
"Oh yeah... suspension..."

That sucks that you didnt know how to pick and use a tool properly, and even moreso that someone didnt spoon feed you step by step instructions on how to do it. Shame on you Advanced Auto.
02LS8Lincoln January 18th, 2010, 09:24 PM thats why i only buy what i need from them and thats final....for advice and help LVC baby yeah!!!!!
Scorpio1118_2000 January 19th, 2010, 11:10 PM For your info wilson I'm in no need to be spoon fed, I just need the right info like any normal person so excuse me if I want to get all the info I can to do the job right. As it turns out the tool from the zone is the same size as the plug not the heli-coil, me and the bro-inlaw went all over town trying to find the right with no luck. So I going to call in the big guns, I met this guy the other day he is a former master tech so now he will taking over. He has the right tool and will do it this weekend.

Scorpio1118_2000 January 20th, 2010, 04:24 PM I knew what to do just did not have the right tool, and I looked at some of threads on here and had a couple mechanic freinds look at it and said I just need the right tool, and this weekend I will have it. And fordnut getting laid was a lot easier than dealing with this no prob in that area. Money is tight and with baby #3 on the way I didn't want to spend too much money, I should be driving her soon. Thanks to all for the good info.
94m5 January 20th, 2010, 04:42 PM We do have idiots working the counters, but not everyone back there is an idiot.

Scorpio1118_2000 October 4th, 2010, 10:06 AM problem solved I just met this guy who is A.S.E. certified that will not only fix the 1 that blewout, but he's going to fix the other 7 as well for $150.00! I was thinking if that 1 would do it would'nt the others as well? So I'm going to have them all done to eliminate all dought.

ripped camel October 4th, 2010, 02:25 PM Should have bought a timesert kit. They are like $400 but when you are done you can re-coup the majority of what you paid for the kit on ebay.
My spark plugs blew out in multiple places on my 2v GT and I used that kit. It was pretty easy to use, and they gave great instructions. The timesert kit is superior to the helicoil because they have a lip that seats onto the engine whereas the helicoil does not.
PHIL ANDERSON October 4th, 2010, 02:40 PM Most of those guys are strictly retail sales people who would be working at walmart or someplace else, they arent car people. Ask for an oil filter for a mark viii , there response is what size engine? Wtf? Dont get advise on pouring oil into your motor from those guys, most dont know just whats on thiere screen. Not all but most
Scorpio1118_2000 October 4th, 2010, 06:16 PM 10 months later?
I was in no rush to get her fixed, I have been driving my focus to keep the miles down and save money on gas. And at the time my wife was pregnant with my little girl at the time(#3 by the way), so the lincoln has been on hold.
So orieley's has the right tool huh?, Im going to check that out.
DieselDan October 5th, 2010, 12:19 AM This guy is going to do the other 7? Which there is nothing wrong with? So you are going to remove the perfectly good threads that are already in the head, drill them out, and put a heli-coil in its place... derrrr
And I donno who that MrWilson guy is, but I like him...

All of them are right!!! But here is one!!!
Loaner tool program at Where else? Advanced!!!
I go in and get Powersteering Pump Pulley Puller Tool!!!
Get home and open it and it is broke! Take it back and they return it in the computer and loan me another one, all through the computer!!! I bring it back three days later! Now, get this I WALKED in with it in my hand!! Take it to the counter, but I lost my receipt! They look it up and tell me that the computer says that both of the items are returned already??? So they can't give me my 28 bucks back! How in the fock did I already return it if I focking walked in the door with it? That :q:q:q:q had me so mad I was about to slap the whole crew lmao!!! I swear man they are so focking dumb! They have the worst employees of any auto parts chain in my town! They have about four people working there at a time and 3 of them have just started within a week! And they know jack:q:q:q:q about a car! Then the manager is gonna tell me to "bring in a receipt because the computer shows that I already returned the item that I walked in the door with!

keep it, do you really need 28 bux?
97SilverLSCcobra October 5th, 2010, 09:34 AM keep it, do you really need 28 bux?
Not really, but I don't need that p.o.s. pulley puller either! I could definitely buy a better one! Advanced sucks all around, even the tools they have!!!
MediumD October 6th, 2010, 06:46 AM Yep, at least 80% of parts store employees are tards. And, take it from someone who's been behind that counter, at least 90% of customers are tards as well.
Anyway, if the computer shows you've returned something, it probably means another customer or (more likely) someone who works there returned it for you and got your money. If bitching at the sales manager gets you nowhere, go to another store and find the district, regional, and divisional managers' numbers... then walk in and threaten to call them all, it usually gets :q:q:q:q done.
JDS353 October 6th, 2010, 11:12 PM not all certs are good when they are appplied to a human that is book smart but dumb when it comes to applying what the book says. common sense is that sense that without which all other sense is NONSENSE.
Scorpio1118_2000 October 10th, 2010, 04:22 PM I'm still thinking about doing it , not really sure. And who says that they are all good just cause they have not blown yet? But at the same time, they might be just fine. only time will tell, thanks for the helpful info guys. And to hell with all the useless flaming.
topher5150 October 13th, 2010, 08:11 AM I changed my transmission solinoid pack and tranny fluid and filter last night. Went to Advanced Auto this morning to figure out why it was shifting so hard. The guy behind the counter told me "All the sludge and dirt got loose and now you transmission is going to be toast....that's why I parked my Tahoe, I changed the fluid, and I was talking to my mechanic and he said if you change the fluid it will ruin you tranny Blah blah blah....Buy this $12 bottle of......"
I called my mechanic this morning and the dealership, and they both said the same thing, either the computer needs to be updated, or the filter isn't seated properly
94m5 October 13th, 2010, 08:30 AM Sigh.......
Medium has it right. I would go even further and say that 95% of the general public is certified moronic. Generally, the more knowledgeable the partsguy(ME), the more idiotic the average customer is. If you need to ask why a trans is slipping/shifting firmly, a retail autoparts store is NOT the place to go asking questions.
A trans is gonna be out of the scope for 98% of the counter people. That being said, we do have alot of morons that work for us who will say anything they can to get money, but not all of us are like that.
As you can tell, I'm not a people person. This is why I have a nice little desk in back, and talk to commercial customers all day.
chicken October 13th, 2010, 09:30 AM when i helped in parts when it was slow at the dealership i always loved the calls
me: chicken parts how can i help you (and yes i usually said something of the sort)
cust: i need a price on tires for my car
me:what size are the tires?
cust: uhhhh i dunno
me: ok what kind of car is it?
cust: a ford....
me: ford what?
cust: i dunno? a car....
me: (randomly naming off late model fords)
cust: i dunno
me: get me the tire size (and explain where to find it)
cust: uhhhhh its a goodyear?
me: and the size is
cust: i dunno i cant find what your referring to
me: look at the back of the car and tell me at least what car it is
cust: oh its a jetta
me:............................................... ....hangs up
no joke ive seen this happen alot
hell MWB had a lady call him at work wanting to know how the keypad on the door worked, he asked her what kind of car she has. the lady says oh i dont have one yet but im looking. so he explains how it works, then she asks him if all cars are like that cuz she really dont like fords but maybe a honda or something, does theirs work the same :slam:
Aquabrit October 13th, 2010, 10:34 AM ^^^^ LMAO!
When I was a BMW enthusiast, my parts guy was so good that he'd just let me come around the desk and use the parts database to find my own stuff! Worked out good! :)
I did purchase an Actron OBD II scanner from Advance Auto Parts the other week. Was just two 30 something women in there. Things go smoothly when I just shove them a piece of paper with the part number on it and say ''I want this''. Only one time at an Advance in NJ did I ever try to talk to a person about a part and all I got in response was: ''can you say all that again in English'' Lol.
ford nut October 13th, 2010, 12:32 PM LoL Your English is poor now that's funny.
Aquabrit October 13th, 2010, 12:41 PM Yup, the irony. :D
chicken October 13th, 2010, 07:52 PM Blimey!!
Sapperfire October 13th, 2010, 11:32 PM one of our parts houses has an 87 year old man working the counter, poor guy is ALWAYS looking up the wrong parts when i have to call to get parts, ive started just going and getting the parts off the shelf there myself

ha yes, Tom is a good ol guy... but should be the greater at wal mart and not at an auto counter
thaywood October 14th, 2010, 08:30 AM I used to work at Advance Auto Parts in Troy, NC about 20 years ago. Seems like people working there knew a lot more about their trade back then. When I interviewed for the job, they asked a lot of basic automotive mechanical questions just to make sure you knew the difference between a spark plug and a walnut. But we had a lot of folks at that store who knew their way around a car. It seems that today, they just hire whoever walks in off the street.
