Yesterday I had the scare of my life. I was in a parking lot in front of a drugstore. There was another car in front of me just backing out. I started my engine and dropped it in gear and the engine reved to max rpm's. Inspite of the fact that I pushed the brake to the floor the car shot ahead. I barely managed to turn the wheel to the left and miss the other car but it jumped over a low curb and knocked down a small tree. The car then did smoking brodies until I reached down and turned off the key. The tach was buried and stuck past the red. There were twin tire marks all over the pavement. People came from everywhere. Thank God no one was hurt, it could have been so much worse. I started the car and it drove home normally. How could this happen? When got home I let the car set for about an hour. Then I went back to start it with the intention of trying to recreate the incident. When I tried to start it the battery was dead. I felt the posts and they were warm. This indicates that there is a major electrical short. Could this be a clue? Could the cruise control do this? I love this car, but until I can find an explanation I am afraid to drive it. The car is a low milage (66K) Mark 7 in seemingly great shape. Anyone? Ideas? Thanks

A similiar incident happened to me on my old car. seems that the accelerator wire had formed a kink in it over the years due to the way the wire path was in the engine bin.. One I put my foot on the gas, it would open the throttle and KEEP IT THERE!! even though I had both feet smashed against the brake.. It was hella scary!! imagine going 40 down a road, seeing a red light up ahead, and when you let off the gas, the gas continued to ACCELERATE torwards stopped cars!! I got that fixed quick

i had something like that happen to me in my mom's 88 Lincoln TC...
was goin down the road and the gas stuck....i got it to stop by hitting the gas pedal hard enough to break it loose...whew!
it turned out that the linkage just needed lubrication.
this was in the cold winter..but i dunno about the battery stuff there, that's a mellon scratcher..
glad ur ok....good luck on finding the problem.
