I think my cars gone craaaaazaaaay. Haha no but i need to change my a/c filter? I have a 2003 lincoln ls v8 and was just wondering if anyone could assist me in doing it myself. So if someone would be so kindly as to point out where it is exactly and how to swap them out id greatly appreciate it. Oh and if someone knows of a specific filter brand I should use that might help too along with where to get them. Im hoping to have this done by today. Thanks guys!

So i just went and looked and i see the plastic piece with the circle clips so i took them off and tried to take off the plastic piece but my wipers are connected to it so I couldnt get it detached..? then i figured that wasnt it and started messing with the box connected to the tube towards the grill on the drivers side and couldnt get that lid off so I put it all back together and now im here baffled again.. would anyone happen to have a picture of the area? haha..

But in case not.. it is on the passenger side under those clips? ha..

The box with the tube on the driver side front is the Engine Air Filter, the one with the round plastic clips you have to pop out is it.. You should be able to do it without taking the wiper off. You can pull the plastic up enough to get to the filter.

Now.. after someone tells me exactly how to do it everyone can feel free to hijack this and ill even keep posting pictures for no reason haha I just need my questions answered and the thread is yours. If its under the windshield on the passenger side how do i get it off if my wipers are attached? do I take those off too or what???

the engine filter is in the front driver side, the AC filter is under the plastic next to the wind shield on the passenger side, yes the piece of plastic that is next to the wipers

just pop up all the little circle clips and bend the plastic back, no need to remove the wiper, just dont do it when its really cold out side as the plastic doesn't bend as much and can crack, you should be able to pull it up enough to see the filter

Actually, push in on the center of the piece, then pull out to install. After you install them push the little center back in, flush with the outer ring.

Somebody probably didn't understand how they worked and broke them and then replaced them with the normal push pins. Both of my gen II have the push-in to remove clips.

If you are going to do that, then you might as well just remove the filter and not put it back. The car will be fine with that.

When I replace mine, the white paper is turned brown from the dirt it collected. You can't clean that without making the holes in the paper so big that it won't stop the dirt anymore.

My '04 and '06 both had the center-push pins like ls4me described; I'm guessing a previous non-rocket scientist owner or dealership may have put the wrong ones back in yours.

The pins you remove run along the top of the leading (radiator-side) edge of the cowl cover. Push the center of the pin down one click, pull the whole pin out, and the leading edge of the cowl cover should lift up enough for you to get into the compartment with the AC filter (which is near the firewall on the passenger side). It's a relatively trivial task.

FWIW, it's a good idea to change it, but it's not a requirement; you can just reset the counter via the Message Center to get it to leave you alone.

I agree with the above guys. It's not needed for proper operation of the car. But it keeps your air inside the car fresh. It filters out different things depending on the type of filter you buy. Some filter out harsh chemicals emitted from other vehicles' exhaust systems, so they don't make it into your car. Others are a charcoal filter and made to eliminate odors.

I normally just reset the message.

Funny how everyone helps out when a woman is offering up pics in return.

That being said, more please :gr_devil:

The problem with that is that some/much of the dirt will migrate all the way through the filter and come out through the air vents. The filter isn't really doing anything then, so you might as well just toss it.

Isn't the message center just on a countdown of vent usage for that thing though? Like you could literally put a brand new one in and it tell u it needs changed after a season of driving - but if you inspect it, it is still fairly new?

Mine is due for a change, but I have driven with it through two message center notifications to tell me to change it, and it is about to tell me to change it for the 3rd time probably this Spring.

I mean unless I am totally obliterating the filter to clean it, I don't think I am making the filter a ton more porous than before.

i did my cabin filter about two weeks. its a PITA just for a filter. i ended up braking 4 of those clips, but the filter only cost me around 25 from the dealership and another 4 for the clips. you just have to take the three off the passenger side cowl and try a peel it back and you will see the filter under there.

Yes, it is just a countdown. It doesn't sense the filter or dirt in any way. So far the count down has been correct for me. Each time it says to change it, I look and the filter is no longer white, so I put a new one in and reset the message.

Hey ZBooBoo, just remove the rubber piece that goes over where the wiper attaches the the wiper arm. when you remove it you will see the nut you need to remove to take the wiper off. then remove that plastic piece, change the filter, and then put it back together. if you lived in my area I would GLADLY change it for you. If you have access to compressed air, you can easily clean the filter by blowing the dirt off the paper pleats. I blow it off both front and back. An old mechanic's trick is to hold the filter up to sunlight. If you can see light thru it, it is clean enough.

You might be able to use the air coming out of some vacuum cleaners if you don't have compressed air. Not as good but usually good enough.

The reset filter message is purely based on mileage, nothing to do with dirt or cycles etc. The manual says it counts up to 15,000 miles and then it is time to change the filter.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Ok so Im going to go outside and attempt it again. But its really not required to change it when it says it is? Cause my check engine light is staying on and my car is idling rough and stalling like it cant keep up or something..? So i figured it was all caused by my filter? The AC filter has nothing to do with your car running rough, you could check your engine air filter, but if your check engine light is on you have something more serious than a dirty air filter. :(

Yes, that is the most likely thing. If you have less than 100K miles, then the coils and VCGs are still covered 100% by Ford warranty.

+1 I think you have a bad coil. You can go to your nearest autozone and they will scan your car's computer. After that you will know more about the reason your check engine is on and why your BooBoo is feeling bad. Post the results and maybe we can help you get your car running perfect again.

Ok.. so. I just tried driving my car to autuozone and it started smoking and getting ready to overheat..? I want to cry! ha.

But I was having my friend look at it and its raining so my engine got a few drops on it. Could the smoke be from that?

And Im about to change my filter right now and probably have it towed home if it doesnt stop smoking.. Im so irritated ugh. I JUST had my car serviced not even 2 weeks ago. And THEN a reinspection because Ford doesnt document whatevers wrong with my car when I have it serviced like wtf. This is getting so frustrating. All i want is for her to run right.

Shes only at about <92,000 miles and I get her serviced at every point because I get it for free from Ford.

Could they be not telling me whats really wrong so when my car does fall apart they are liable?

I love Fords I really do but goodness.. Im tired of being found on the road DEAD!

;[

Sorry.. Im sad now. Ill post more pictures when I find out whats really wrong..

And I have ESP for my car through Ford. Say I change my AC filter (which isnt covered under my warranty like wtf???) and theres still something wrong.. They can get into a lot of trouble right? haha cause my car has over 100 components covered like all my gaskets engine pieces brakes, etc, so that might have to do with whats going on right?

And Im covered under ESP til 110,000/5 years and I just got it in Jan at 80,000

Andrizzle

If the smoke was white, its possible it was steam coming off the manifold from the rain... But that seems weird for 'a few drops'.

Like others have said, check the coils. I would take it to the dealer and tell them to take a look at the coils since its under warranty for that.

December 11th, 2009, 06:06 PM
AFter reading all that, I want to say it's valve cover gaskets. The running rough is from oil getting into your spark plug wells, and killing the coils. Maybe it's leaking bad enough that you are getting oil onto the manifold, and the smoke is it burning off.

Are you losing oil?

Also, is the car actually getting up to max on the temp guage, or are you just assuming it's overheating because of the smoke?

If it is overheating, it could be something as simple as air in the cooling system, and it just needs to be bled properly.

Your catalytic converters are failing because your car has been misfiring for a while. Misfires = raw gas going into the catalytic converters. Raw gas into catalytic converters = ruined converters.
Coverage completely depends on the terms of your particular warranty.
If you don't completely correct the misfire problem(s), then the replacement converters will quickly fail too.

Alax7
December 17th, 2009, 11:25 AM
And get your coils fixed first because if you fix the cats first and then decide to do coils a little later, you're going to mess up your cats again. Probably should do both at the same time asap but coils first to not damage new cats.
