Alax7 November 3rd, 2009, 08:56 PM I saw a post by pektel saying his lsd cost his around 300. Thats not bad at all. I thought it would be a lot more expensive, like in the 600-1000 category. I know a few people on here have it on a gen 1 but does anybody know of a gen 2 with it? Besides ILLS I think. Oh and what did it come off of? I saw that thread want to do this to my 04.
Alax7 November 3rd, 2009, 08:59 PM Did some more searching and found this posted by ILLS.
This Differential will fit the Ford 8.8" differential including cars such as:
1) Lincoln Mark VIII
2) Lincoln LS Gen1
3) Lincoln LS Gen2 (with MarkVIII carrier and axle swap)
Meaning? So there is more to it than just buying an lsd and swaping it out? I need Mark parts?
pektel November 3rd, 2009, 09:26 PM the diff is different on the gen 2. you need a gen 1 pumpkin and axles at least. and maybe driveshaft. my lsd came out of an 04 mustang gt. i reused the stock gen 1 pumpkin, ring gear, and pinion.
Alax7 November 3rd, 2009, 10:36 PM And the pumkpin, axle and drive shaft from a gen 1 are interchangable with a gen 2? So then no more 300 lsd swap huh
TDUB November 3rd, 2009, 11:12 PM I just wish it wasn't such a pain in the ass to get higher gears for these cars.
1LoudLS November 4th, 2009, 09:58 AM put a 8.8 LSD in a 1st gen pumpkin and then put the 1st gen axels and pumpkin in a 2nd gen car, you should only need the drive shaft if you using a mark VIII carrier for changing gears like jason did.
Silver_LS November 4th, 2009, 10:22 AM A custom drive shaft?
pektel November 4th, 2009, 10:25 AM Yep, jason has a custom driveshaft. Since he is using the bigger 8.8" pumpkin and taller gears. He also had to fab custom brackets for mounting the pumpkin.
Silver_LS November 4th, 2009, 11:03 AM I meant for a strait swap using Gen 1 diff and shafts into a Gen 2 to get the LSD but still retaining the gearing I have. I know Jason has 4:11 right?
I guess I could just go look at the thread lol.
pektel November 4th, 2009, 11:16 AM Right, I knew what you meant. From what 1LoudLS stated, you don't need to change out your driveshaft if using the gen1 LS pumpkin.
Alax7 November 4th, 2009, 10:51 PM put a 8.8 LSD in a 1st gen pumpkin and then put the 1st gen axels and pumpkin in a 2nd gen car, you should only need the drive shaft if you using a mark VIII carrier for changing gears like jason did.
Ok sounds simple. I prob can't pull this off nor do I have the space so I get the parts and a shop will do the rest?
1LoudLS November 5th, 2009, 01:35 PM yea definitly check out the thread on the swap, it used to be a stickie but has been taken down, all of the parts and what you need to is in there, just make sure you read all the way through it as there was some guessing in the beginning but then they figured it out in the end, i dont remember what the name of it was, i think it was something with 4.10s in it
pektel November 5th, 2009, 01:42 PM This is the thread that used to be stickied:
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=36857
But that was with an 8.8" housing, and 4.10's. Which require custom brackets, and a custom driveshaft.
1LoudLS November 5th, 2009, 01:54 PM yea i just went through it and that's not the one that i was thinking about, there is a thread that jason and rob where discussing what parts they though would work as long as you didn't want to do the gear swap, then somebody got the parts and did the swap(02v8sport i think, didn't he trade up for a mazda speed 6)
SPSully November 5th, 2009, 02:20 PM ok,
LSD or locker (take your pic) fits in the gen1 pumpkin only. You can swap either diff from the LS's with no real work to speak of, just swap them. You will need the gen 1 shafts too. You can choose which set of LS gears you want.
Missing Linc' November 5th, 2009, 02:33 PM So Gen 1 pumpkin and axles/halfshafts will fit right into a Gen 2 correct?
pektel November 5th, 2009, 02:48 PM yes.
pektel November 5th, 2009, 02:49 PM I saw a post by pektel saying his lsd cost his around 300. Thats not bad at all.
Actually, it was under 200 when it was all said and done. :D
But I did not pay a shop to do it.
1LoudLS November 5th, 2009, 02:50 PM this is rob's thread I was looking for
http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=39863&highlight=limited+slip
all the info is in there, just make sure that you read the whole thing as there was some back and forth on what parts where needed
1LoudLS November 5th, 2009, 03:00 PM Actually, it was under 200 when it was all said and done. :D
But I did not pay a shop to do it.
not too mention pete has a 1st gen, so he didn't have to buy axles and a carrier, just the lsd
so far i've got a Trac-loc with a fresh re-build and 1 axle, once i find another axle and a 1st gen pumpkin i'm all set
pektel November 5th, 2009, 03:18 PM yeah, just thoughtI'd rub it in a little lol.
IIRC, this is the list of what I needed:
LSD from an 04 mustang GT (28 spline)
gasket maker
pattern paint
motorcraft 80/90 synthetic diff fluid
motorcraft friction modifier
new axle seals (figured why the hell not, since it's already out on the bench)
new ring gear bolts
shim kit (the 8.8" shim kit will work. I bought it without knowing for sure)
I think that's it. there may be something else though that I'm forgetting.
A specialty tool you may not have is a dial indicator. You can get one at Harbor freight for about 30 bucks. (15 for the dial indicator, 15 for the magnetic base).
Be sure to have a shop manual to determine the correct torque specs too.

i might be offloading my rear end shortly.... depends on how fast i can find my replacement. PM me for details

200 is a bit of a steal for that. But it goes to show you how cheap it can be found for. I paid 500 or so for my eaton locker brand new. Much more robust than the trac loc, but 99.9% of LS's will never even come close to needing that much overkill.
So Gen 1 pumpkin and axles/halfshafts will fit right into a Gen 2 correct?
yup!!!

Look at you go! I take a break and come back to see Pete the tech guy!!!!
pektel November 6th, 2009, 09:48 AM Eh, at least it looks like I know what I'm talking about. I am far from a "skilled mechanic" or anything.
Missing Linc' November 6th, 2009, 09:50 AM Pete did you email that guy yet??
pektel November 6th, 2009, 09:57 AM Yeah. I haven't sent him a second email though. I gotta see about the next install job I have lined up for this month, so I can tell him a timeline to see if he's willing to wait to sell it to me.
Is he trustworthy?
Missing Linc' November 6th, 2009, 10:57 AM Ive never dealt with him but I can see if there is any feedback on Mustangforums about him, going to check now
EDIT - I got nothing on him.
SPSully November 6th, 2009, 05:15 PM who are you talking to about what? I want to know damn it!
Missing Linc' November 7th, 2009, 06:43 AM The mod that I did and couldnt figure out why my car wouldnt start so I called you.
Silver_LS November 7th, 2009, 07:30 PM The mod that I did and couldnt figure out why my car wouldnt start so I called you.
Well what the hell.... lol I was wanting to know what mod by the time I got to the end. aw well
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 09:57 AM The mod that I did and couldnt figure out why my car wouldnt start so I called you.
ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! I gets it now. You both suck huge sack! I need me one them too!!!!!!!! Of course that tire spin issue wont be a problem for me like it was for you.... Locker FTW:D
pektel November 9th, 2009, 10:03 AM The mod that I did and couldnt figure out why my car wouldnt start so I called you.
Why in the hell would your car not start after doing that mod?
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 10:07 AM cause he bumped a wire and it came loose from the sensor it was reading. Yeah he had me stumped too when he called in a panic
pektel November 9th, 2009, 10:08 AM ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! I gets it now. You both suck huge sack! I need me one them too!!!!!!!! Of course that tire spin issue wont be a problem for me like it was for you.... Locker FTW:D
That tire spin won't be an issue for me either
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 10:18 AM hee hee.... now I just need to see if I can beat one of you guys in a race..... I have more power, you have that sweet little toy in there. If you win, I def buy one. If I win, I def buy one. I guess the whole point would just be to race LOL And pete, dont worry buddy, I'll take the bottle out for ya. Thats 150 horse advantage I dont think you can cover. :p
pektel November 9th, 2009, 10:23 AM yeah, good idea. Only beat me by a little bit to make me feel better lol.
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 10:36 AM lol... i think with that new mod it should be close.... and you might win. As for with the bottle, good night I dont care what LS wants a piece. ONly down side to that is Id have to run my stickies or the rear will never plant
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 10:41 AM i've got a buddy that drives around with a stockish SHO (not the cool new one) that drives around with a home made sneaky pete inside his stock air box for just such a occasion.
his sneaky pete consist of one of little CO2 containers(not the little baby ones, its like 10"x2") from a paint ball gun filled with giggle gas, a solenoid and a wireless doorbell to trigger the solenoid all ran off of a couple 9v batterys, i dont think it does too much, but he swears that many races has been won by this little guy
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 10:44 AM if thats what I wanted, id just run with my big bottle. My nitrous is so hidden anyway that even guys in the biz didnt catch it till they saw the bottle I had on display at a car show. Thats why my install took days instead of hours.
pektel November 9th, 2009, 10:58 AM I remember you talking about that stealth nitrous setup before. To me that sounds like the only way to go. Especially since the average cop couldn't find it if pulled over.
cannons_custom November 9th, 2009, 11:06 AM Does the advance trac still work when you switch it to a limited slip differential? may be a dumb question but i'm just curious. That's why im being hesistant about doing it to my gen 1 until winter ends here in wi even though it hasnt started yet.
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 11:08 AM advancetrac is the car sensing slip..... the LSD limits slip. So they help eachother out. I would do it now instead of later. These cars have issues getting going in the snow and the LSD is a big help!
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 11:12 AM its a cool ideal (other than driving around all the time with a live system) and he has used it in many of his cars, the only problem is that the little a$$ bottle can only hold 6-10 seconds of spray depending on the jet, and your screwed if the dude your racing says "i had a sh!tty launch, lets do it again" I think it would just be better to do a real good job hiding all the components and having a real system, plus he is relying on the MAF to read all the extra air and add enough fuel, I still dont think its such a hot ideal to spray through the MAF, how many cops are going to check for a system in a lincoln anyway?
cannons_custom November 9th, 2009, 11:13 AM where is the best place for me to find a used 8.8" 28 spline LSD?
pektel November 9th, 2009, 11:13 AM +1. The improved traction is a must in the snow.
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 11:14 AM where is the best place for me to find a used 8.8" 28 spline LSD?
junk yard or ebay
pektel November 9th, 2009, 11:15 AM where is the best place for me to find a used 8.8" 28 spline LSD?
Mine came out of a 2004 Mustang GT. I got it from a member here for a pretty good deal (a little over $100 shipped IIRC).
Maybe hit up a mustang forum. Find someone who upgraded their diff. Maybe post a WTB thread or something.
cannons_custom November 9th, 2009, 11:17 AM what kinda vehicle are these generally in. I've never dealt with rear ends before so I'm gonna buy the parts then have a shop do it. I know lame but thats one thing I don't wanna even chance messing up.
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 11:18 AM unless you are going to gear up big time, its not worth the trouble IMO. Id run the 8" with gen 2 gears and a trac loc unless you are looking to go big nuts with it! Cost vs gains is crazy if your just going to run like a 3.73 for example. Hell your not going to see a big difference from gen 1 to gen 2 gears either, but its not going to cost an arm and a leg. You already have the right pumpkin installed, dont need a custom drive shaft etc
i missread sorry. I see now you just want the lsd..... my above advice is still true of people wanting to go with the 8.8
cannons_custom November 9th, 2009, 11:28 AM haha thats fine. yeah im not really into fabbing an 8.8 into my ls for my first rear end project. maybe once I get the basics down and win the lottery. I have a feeling that wont happen so im guessing the 8.8 wont either...
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 11:32 AM lol
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 12:33 PM i would love to do gears, maybe 4.10's, but i do way too much hwy driving and am afraid of getting even worse that my 18mpg's i get now
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 12:38 PM 18? on the highway? your car sucks............. too much gas
I get 24mpg avg and thats a mix of highway city country driving
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 12:49 PM well when im in town, i usually drive it like i stole it, and i'm not too light on the pedal on the hwy either, on a long trip if i use the cruse control i will get around 24, I also use my remote start a lot and that contributes to it a lot i'm sure
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 12:50 PM hmmmm still seems a bit thirsty to me. you tuned?
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 12:51 PM not yet, that high on the list too
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 12:53 PM that should help a bit
1LoudLS November 9th, 2009, 12:58 PM just like when i got my K&N, i will probably want to keep my foot even farther into the gas lol
SPSully November 9th, 2009, 01:02 PM true enough!
02LSE96LSC91SE84TC November 9th, 2009, 05:27 PM Tune helps mileage alot. The gears seemed to drop mileage only a little bit. Believe it or not I believe my 20s lost more mileage than the gears.
1LoudLS November 10th, 2009, 10:43 AM what kind of RPM are you turning at 80-85
Alax7 December 5th, 2011, 06:24 PM Just thought I would post in my own thread, just bought a trac-lok. I found a gen1 at a junk yard that still has the rear end, going to pick up the axles and carrier soon.
1LoudLS December 6th, 2011, 07:24 PM dont you have to have a car to put these parts on first :shifty:
i kid, i kid.
but seriously though, are you ever getting your car back?

I was waiting for someone to call me out on it :p
Should be home any day now this or next week.
The anodized pieces came in last week, they said the intercooler looked good, but the intake pipe looked alright. They were going to polish it but I said not to because I was going to have it powder coated black, so the polish wold be pointless. When I sent the intercooler to get anodized, i just told them to take the intake too. I forgot it wasn't polished so all the imperfection showed with the ano. Brake issues were resolved and are ready to be installed.Completion is very close I can taste it
M4rk December 6th, 2011, 07:43 PM Should be home any day now this or next week.
Read: Should be home in 2012.
Alax7 December 6th, 2011, 07:47 PM I hope not! That would suck because then I wont be in school and I'll really feel the absence of my ls.
