CHICAGO -- With major luxury brands in its crosshairs, Cadillac is about to get more aggressive selling vehicles overseas. Cadillac General Manager Jim Taylor said the division plans to sell 10,000 vehicles outside North America by the end of 2006, up from an estimated 2,000 units last year. And from 2007 through 2010, Cadillac hopes to double its international sales every year.
The brand aims to raise its international profile and increase sales in untapped markets. "This year we will really ramp up," Taylor said at the Chicago Auto Show. "We'll start opening some doors globally."
Cadillac has had little success overseas. General Motors has tried to create a niche for the brand in Japan and Europe. But sales were minimal, and the United States remains Cadillac's sole high-volume market.
Last year, Cadillac's North American sales totaled 242,089 units. In Europe last year, the figure was only 1,167. But GM is retooling its strategies for Japan and Europe, and it is plunging into the fast-growing luxury market in China. In the past year, GM has opened 11 Cadillac stores there.
