With this torque converter problem is there a noticeable loss in power/acceleration?

i would replace the converter but it really sounds like its coming from the front of the motor. is that where the noise was coming from on yours guys?
cause if it needs a chain it gets a for sale sign. $920+my labor id rather pull the motor. anybody know if a 302 will fit in a ls?;)
