I was driving my car today for about 1 hr, this included a lot of traffic. Anyways, I made a stop at the bookstore, when I got back in the car, there was a faint odor. The only thing I can describe it as, is "hair spray." I started it up, drove to my next destination, the odor became stronger. I also noticed it more while in motion, as opposed to waiting at a light.

I'm totally confused on this one, I checked the brake fluid and oil in the trunk, they weren't leaking. The only other thing I can think of is freon? I was told I had a leaky A/C hose, and I was running the A/C the whole time. Does freon smell like hair spray?

This has me worried a little. Also, I didn't see any visible leaks.

Like I said, the odor became quite strong, pretty rapidly.

I talked to my mechanic, he mentioned that there may be some fungus, etc. built up on the evaporator. He mentioned the Hair spray smell could be ammonia? I bought some "ozium", and sprayed it into the vents, fresh air vent and under the dash as well. I won't be able to tell for a while, as I won't drive the car until Tuesday.

Does this sound like that could be an issue? A guy on another board mentioned the heater core leaking and I'm smelling antifreeze. I've smelled antifreeze plenty of times, never had it smell like hair spray. Could this guy be correct? The heater doesn't work as is, I'll bypass the heater core if that's the issue.

On a side note, I just so happened to run into a "Cadillac STS Northstar." It was a punk kid driving it, he revved a few times at a light. The speed limit was only 45, so I shut down at 50-55. By that time, I had 4-5 car lengths on him. As I turned into Checker, he gave the old "ricer flyby." He floored it, and that poor old Caddy was blowing a bit of smoke.:lol: Anyways, no relevance but it put a smile on my face, in spite of the nasty "smell."

If your heater core isn't working and you have standing liquid in there,that may be your problem. Stagnant liquid has a bad odor to it,as you don't need it in AZ, I'd flush it and bypass it. But it doesn't hurt to try the ozium also. Nice beating you gave that "punk kid" in the caddy. BTW sounds like he has a bad head gasket,and the fool doesn't even know it:D

O.K., thanks for the info. If the smell is still there after a couple of ozium treatments, I'll look into the heater core.

Uhhh... Mike? I don't know how to say this... Oil is usually upfront, in the motor on these cars. So is the brake fluid. :D
